The aesthetic designs of Psychic-Types are typically purple and pink colors with an aura of mysticism. This makes their designs some of the most popular to the Pokémon fandom.
Psychic-Types are also quite popular for legendary Pokémon such as Mew, Mewtwo, Cosmog, Cresselia, and many more. However, legendary or not, what designs are the best? Here are the ten best Psychic-Type designs, ranked.
10 Munna
Known as the “Dream Eater Pokémon,” Munna was introduced in the Black & White generation.
Its design is pretty cute, being an orb with pink flower designs. Its design is actually inspired by a certain kind of Japanese incense burner called “koro.” They are often shaped like pigs with designs painted on them (such as Munna’s floral pattern).
9 Girafarig
This design is known to be bizarre, but likable! Obviously, its front side is based on a giraffe. It is unmistakable. It is the backside that makes it unique though. It looks a little like a Chain Chomp from a Mario game. It is speculated that its design is loosely based on a dinosaur, the Stegosaurus! That is because scientists believed that the dinosaur would fight off others with its tail. There were even theories that the Stegosaurus has a second brain, much like how Girafarig is seen.
8 Cosmog
This legendary puff ball was introduced in the Sun & Moon generation of games, and fans fell in love with its pretty colors and adorable face. Also, you can ever go wrong with a cosmic and star theme.
Its design is based off of a molecular cloud, which is also sometimes called a “stellar nursery.” If you look up pictures of molecular clouds, they are quite beautiful and are the reason Cosmog looks the way it does.
7 Hattrem
Hattrem is actually not the final evolution in its line, but it definitely has the best design of the three. It is absolutely adorable with its tiny body and giant mage hat. It uses its hair to walk around as well instead of its little legs. If only it stayed this cute!
There is an old folk belief that a witches power came from her hair, which obviously is part of what inspired Hattrem’s design.
6 Espurr
Espurr has been the subject of memes because of its giant eyes and neutral expression. They often look like they are having war-flashbacks, and that is why fans love their design. They are both adorable and just a tiny bit odd.
Their cuteness is similar to that of a Scottish fold feline, which is known for its folded-ears. Based on its later evolution designs, Espurr may also be based on a Japanese folklore creature, Nekomata, which has its tail split as it grows in supernatural power.
5 Espeon
Eevee’s evolutions will always be among the best of Pokémon designs. They all resemble a mix between foxes and cats, both of which are very cute and popular in folklore.
Espeon in particular is like Espurr in that it’s tail splits. So it could also be based on Nekomata folklore. Its traits are also like a Carbuncle since it is a being with a gem in its head. In terms of cats, Espeon resembles various ones such as servals, oriental shorthairs, and lynxes.
4 Cresselia
Cresselia is yet another legendary Psychic-type, and was introduced in the Diamond & Pearl generation. Its design is pretty unique, as its form resembles a swan but with a lot of lunar motifs. This may because it is based on a swan constellation known as “Cygnus.”
It actually resembles a lesser-known bird of legend out of the Philippine Islands called Sarimanok.
3 Galarian Ponyta
The original Ponyta is Fire-Type, but the Sword & Shield games gave us the gift of a regional variant. The Galarian Ponyta is definitely one of the favorites to come out of the most recent generation. Obviously, it is based on a unicorn. You can never go wrong with unicorns!
What fans adore most about this design is its cotton candy colors and fluffy tail and mane. Due to that, the Galarian Ponyta actually outranks its evolved form in terms of design. When it evolves, it gets less fluffy and cute.
2 Mew
Being one of the first legendary Pokémon has made Mew recognizable to even non-fans all over the world. It is one of the most adorable of the legendary Pokémon as well. Its design is based on jerboa, cats, and embryos. Jerboa are desert rodents with large ears that hop around on their hind legs with long tails.
The embryo resemblance comes from Mew’s descriptions. It is said to be the mother of all Pokémon. Resembling an embryo makes that more significant.
1 Gardevoir
Gardevoir is a fan favorite for many reasons. A major one is its design. It is elegant!
A lot of different elements went into its design as well. It slightly resembles a Principle Dancer due to how it moves and looks as though its wearing a dress. It also may have been inspired by a traditional style of Japanese doll, due to its exaggerated head size and frail body. Other comparisons include ghosts and spirits due to how it moves. Some of theorized its based on a guardian angel due to its description of how it protects its trainer.
