Rock-Type Pokémon have been around since the first generation. They are not among the starter types though, so they are not always in every players team. Many competitive players actually avoid Rock-Types, as they are tied with Grass for Type with the most weaknesses.

However, most fans play for fun and do not care about weaknesses. What they all really care about is the design! Here are the then best Rock-Type designs, ranked.

10 Omanyte

Omanyte is one of the two first generation fossil Pokémon. It’s design is based on a common fossil you may have actually seen in real life musueums. The extinct create Omanyte is based on is called a ammonite. Not only is the design similar, but so is the name!

In its own way, Omanyte is also pretty cute! Its shell, big eyes, and tiny tentacles are adorable.

9 Kabutops

Kabutops is the evolution of the other fossil Pokémon to come out of the Kanto region, Kabuto. Like Omanyte, its design is based on a real fossil you may have seen in a museum somewhere. It is based on sea scorpions. What’s interesting is that Kabuto is based on a horseshoe crab, and science has theorized that sea scorpions were related to horseshoe crabs. In that sense, the creators of these fossil Pokémon really did their homework!

Kabutops is not cute, but quite cool in its design. Fans love it for its scythe-like arms.

8 Rampardos

Skipping forward a couple generations, we have yet another fossil! For a long time, all fossils were Rock-Type.

Rampardos is actually a Rock-Type known for having the highest Attack stat. Its design is based off a dinosaur called Pachycephalosauria. That’s a mouthful!

7 Corsola

The design for this Water and Rock-Type is obviously coral. Specifically, fans thinks Corsola is made of “precious coral” due to its coloring.

While the design is not so creative, it is especially cute. Pink Rock-Types are a rarity. It is a design you would expect more for a Fairy-Type. However, Fairy-Type did not exist in Generation II.

6 Minior

Minior has a great design just for the amount of colors they can be. They are actually tied with Alcremie in terms of the amount of designs a player can get.

To any fan of Japanese sweets, they could look a little familiar. This is because their designs are a lot like Konpeitō, which is a kind of sugar candy that comes in a wide variety of colors and flavors. How sweet!

5 Carbink

Speaking of Fairy-Types, there are Rock and Fairy-Type combinations. Carbink is one such Pokémon. Final Fantasy fans might get a kick out of this, as Carbinks may be based on Carbuncles. Carbuncles are not just creatures from the Final Fantasy series though, they are mythical creatures believed to reside in gemstones. Obviously, Carbink’s name does sound similar to Carbuncle.

Their designs are adorable, seeming like rabbits nestled in a piece of ore.

4 Diancie

Diancie is another Rock and Fairy-Type combination. Like Carbink, its design may be an inspiration from the mythical Carbuncle. However, unlike Carbink, its design is much more feminized. It is also a legendary and can Mega-Evolve. It’s Mega-Evolution is gorgous and actually has had many fans compare it to the design of Godoka from Puella Magi Madoka Magica.

Besides a Carbuncle, other fans have theorized Diancie is loosely based on the idea of the “princess-cut” diamond.

3 Lycanroc

This goes for both the midnight and dusk forms of Lycanroc, as both are great designs. Who doesn’t like wolf-based designs? They are not just any wolves. The dusk form is loosely based on on extinct species of wolves that are known as Hokkaido wolves. The midnight form may be more obvious to fans, as it is based on werewolves.

The fact that they are Rock-Type could be linked to the fact that wolves in Japan live in the mountains.

2 Tyranitar

Tyranitar is both Dark and Rock-Type and has a resembles to a couple creatures. One creature is the T-Rex. Like a T-Rex, Tyranitar has stubby arms and walks on its hind legs with a large body and ferocious demeanor. Some fans have theorized its design is also based on a kaiju, a Japanese monster like Godzilla. Others have said it could loosely be based on the armadillo lizard.

Whatever the case may be, Tyranitar has a very cool design and fans love to have one on their team.

1 Aurorus

Being both Ice and Rock-Type has given Aurorus a ton of weaknesses, which is quite unfortunate since it has the best design of any Rock-Type. Many fans have claimed it to be their favorite fossil. Like other Rock-Types, its design is based on a dinosaur, particularly the Amargasaurus.

What makes it the best is that it is combined with both a dinosaur and the color changing phenomenon of aurora borealis. That is where its Ice-Typing comes from. Some fans theorized its design is like a queen in some ways. The sails down its neck is like a headdress and the markings on its forehead are like a tiara.
