It has now been over 20 years since the first Shrek movie came out. The series is still huge in its cultural influence. It has spawned many memes, sequels, comics, a musical, and even a fan-made shot-by-shot remake (titled Shrek Retold).
Of course, among all these legacies, there is also a wealth of Shrek video games. They are pretty well-known to be low-quality. However, they have still managed to be special and nostalgic for some gamers. Some of them could even be described as “not terrible!”
10 Shrek: Swamp Kart Speedway
Swamp Kart Speedway is at the bottom of the barrel when it comes to Shrek media. It came out in 2002 for the Game Boy Advance and got lower than a 30 percent review score on Metacritic. In fact, it is known as one of the worst racing games of all time. In a sense, that is sort of an achievement.
Playable characters in the game included Shrek, the Three Little Pigs, Three Blind Mice, Donkey, Fiona, the Ginger Bread Man, and more. While it was a bad game on its own, it looked even worse next to popular racing giants like Mario Kart.
9 Shrek: Fairy Tale Freakdown
This game was actually released before Swamp Kart Speedway in 2001 for the Game Boy Color. Instead of racing, it was an action fighting title. Video game publications like Game Informer absolutely hated the game, giving it less than a one out of five with a 0.5 score.
The game consisted of nine stages and nine playable characters, including Dragon, Shrek, Fiona, Wolf, Pinocchio, the Ginger Bread Man, and Robin Hood.
8 Shrek: Smash n’ Crash Racing
Review scores for this Shrek racing game are double what Swamp Cart Speedway got, though that still only raises it to a score of four out of 10.
It came out in 2006 for the PS2, Gamecube, PSP, Nintendo DS, and Gameboy Advance. It was considered average instead of horrible like its predecessor. With Swamp Kart Speedway, there was nowhere else for the video games to go but up.
7 Shrek For Xbox
Released in 2001 with Fairy Tale Freakdown, the Xbox game of Shrek actually continued the story of Shrek after the first movie. The story follows an original story in which Fiona is kidnapped by an evil wizard and Shrek has to save her.
While the game was still considered poor by critics, it at least had some creative writing that could expand the story for fans.
6 Shrek’s Carnival Craze
This game was released in 2008 for the Wii, PC, PS2, and Nintendo DS. The game basically worked as a collection of mini-games. The names of such games included Cheese Ball, Frog Fling, Candy Keep Away, Eyeball Toss, and Mud Slide Madness.
Basically, it’s a Shrek party game. Gamers are better off with Mario Party titles, but Shrek fans would probably get a kick out of this one.
5 Shrek The Third For DS
This entry was released in 2007 for the DS, Xbox 360, PS2, PSP, Wii, Windows, and Game Boy Advance. Its highest ratings went to its DS version, though. The Game Boy Advance version was also the last Game Boy Advance Dreamworks Animation game to ever be released.
The plot of the game completely followed the third movie and the game overall received mostly average reviews.
4 Shrek 2: Beg For Mercy
Puss in Boots is actually the main character of this sidescroller game. It was released in 2004 and became much lesser known than other Shrek games, despite being better than some others.
The game is pretty simple. You jump around, climb, fight enemies, and collect coins while taking on the role of various Shrek characters.
3 Shrek Forever After: The Game
This was the last Shrek title to be made by Activision and the only one to ever be available on the PS3 console. The game is entirely based on the fourth movie.
The reviews were pretty merciful, ranging on average to even some positive. It was released in 2010. Coming out later than most of the other Shrek games did lend Forever After prettier graphics.
2 Shrek SuperSlam
In comparison to Fairy Tale Freakdown, Shrek SuperSlam is the better Shrek fighting game. It was released in 2005 for the Xbox PS2, Gamecube, Nintendo DS, Windows, and Gameboy Advance.
The game contained various characters from the first two films, and even sprinkled in some original characters like the Black Knight and Luna. The game also had three multiplayer modes — King of the Hill, Melee, and Slamageddon.
1 Shrek 2
Here is where nostalgia lives. This game came out in 2004 for the PS2, Gamecube, Xbox, Game Boy Advance, and Windows and is known by fans to be the best Shrek game. The title contains eleven levels and the player controls four characters. Besides the levels, there are also mini-games.
While the games’ plot is like the movie, it also included parts not shown in the film. The Game Boy Advance version did look far different than the others, as it was a sidescroller instead of 3D.
