Bugsnax is a game that was given out for free on PS5, allowing players of the new console to indulge in its fun gameplay. Bugsnax places players in the life of a journalist sent to interview a famous explorer about her latest discovery. Supposedly there is an island full of edible creatures that resemble everyday bugs and an ancient civilization that used to live there.
During player’s time on the island, they must capture the bugsnaks, help bring back the Grumpuses together, and solve the mystery of the missing explorer. While the game has tons of great features, there are some improvements that could be made to make it a more enjoyable experience for gamers.
10 Best: Snak Designs
It’s safe to say that the playful and creative signs of the bugsnax themselves are nothing but innovative. From angry Bungers to flying pizza slices that resemble a moth, the game is a fun romp through snack land. Around every corner is a new type of snak for players to catch.
On top of being an interesting design, each bugsnak has a unique way that it must be caught.
9 Worst: No Fast Travel
One glaring issue that many gamers face is the fact that they have to walk or run everywhere. There is no fast travel button that will let them quickly move to another area. Instead, they must walk to their destination while waiting on short loading screens each time they enter an area.
This isn’t a problem at first, but for later missions that require different biomes traveling can get tedious.
8 Best: Comedy
The comedy in the game is top-notch and, at times, incredibly puny. The names of the snaks are all fun plays on the bugs they resemble, and the cast of characters found in the game have quirky personalities. Even during the many spats that occur between NPCs, many players find themselves chucking.
At its heart, Bugsnax is a light-hearted game that sucks players in with its witty dialogue.
7 Worst: Non-Skippable Text
One thing that pulls this game down and makes replay a bit tough is the fact that dialogue is hard to skip. You have to wait quite a bit before you can press the next button instead of just being able to fly through text. This can make replaying through quests a drag for most players.
Easy to skip dialogue would be perfect since Bugsnax is the type of game that players would happily speedrun.
6 Best: Innovative Gameplay
Games like Bugsnax are always praised for bringing a fresh way to play games. You don’t just use a single gadget to scoop up the snaks. Instead, you need to use everything from a trap to a tripwire to make it possible to collect all the stranger creatures present on the island.
Some bugsnaks even act like mini-puzzles as you need to lure them into water or fire to capture them.
5 Worst: Forced to Party Cutscenes
Just like with the dialogue, you can’t just skip over the game’s cutscenes, even if you have done the final party before. This makes it a bit annoying to try and go back for the end game achievements if you didn’t get them the first time around, as you have to watch everyone’s scenes again.
Being able to skip over the parties that help move the game’s story forward would be a huge plus.
4 Best: Side-Quests
The side-quests in the game help to add to the quirky and comedic nature of the Grumpuses. The side-quests will send the player running off into the wilderness to catch a plethora of Bugsnax to plant in the in-game guardian and to help Chandlo get even buffer.
These small quests help expand the game’s total play times for fans who can’t get enough of Bugsnax.
3 Worst: Snak Info
Some of the Bugsnak descriptions will leave players scratching their heads about how the creatures are caught. In many cases, players are catching many of the snaks by accident after stumbling across the method to stun or knock them out while exploring the area.
The snak descriptions could stand to give a bit more of a hint about capturing each individual bugsnak.
2 Best: Boss Fights
The gameplay of Bugsnax is overall a pretty laid back experience. For players looking for a bit more challenge, though, there are secret boss battles. These battles will give the players unique challenges that will need to be completed in order to collect every single creature.
The boss battles are a fun surprise with some incredibly unique snak designs and capture methods.
1 Worst: No Save Feature
One of the biggest issues with Bugsnax is how it saves. In many cases, the player will have to actually try and quit the game to see how long ago it saved. There is no way to save the game manually, which is especially annoying for those who want to do side-quests without making the end game even harder.
This can also be annoying for trophy hunters who usually make multiple saves to ensure they don’t have to replay through the game.
