E3 is upon us, and because this year’s presentation is digital-only, that means more trailers than you can shake a severed cybernetic arm at. The Ascent is no exception, with a 45-second trailer showing this top-down shooter’s fast-paced, loot-filled action.
From the great minds at Neon Digital, an 11-person Swedish studio, The Ascent is a twin-stick looter shooter where you play as a gun-for-hire on an alien planet. Megacorporations have essentially ruined everything, and after they leave the planet, mayhem breaks out as a power vacuum leaves criminal gangs and warlords in charge.
You take jobs for the megacorps to bring order back to a lawless world, which generally means a whole bunch of murdering. And looting. And upgrading your mercenary with bigger and better guns.
The Ascent’s E3 trailer shows how you’ll shoot your way through waves of enemies with lasers, missiles, and AoE attacks that will level entire attack squads at once. You can dive and use cover to avoid return fire, or use one of your character’s defensive abilities to throw up shields, go invisible, or do something else to prevent yourself from being perforated.
Sam did a preview of the game earlier in May, and he called The Ascent’s combat so good it’s “addicting.” Sadly, he only had a few hours to play and got left hanging, but fortunately for both him and everyone else, we won’t have to wait too long for the Ascent to arrive.
The Ascent hits Xbox and PC on July 29, and if you’re an Xbox Game Pass subscriber, you’ll be able to play the game on day one.
Xbox and Bethesda had a whole bunch of announcements at E3 this year, including The Outer Worlds 2, a Top Gun expansion for Microsoft Flight Simulator, Forza Horizon 5, and Arcane’s all-new co-op shooter, Redfall.
