Get ready for Great Pretender, a new anime produced by WIT Studio from the creators of Attack on Titan, Vinland Saga, and Ancient Magus Bride, yet nothing at all like what fans might be expecting. Instead of devastating titans, the story focuses on Makoto Edamura, a confidence man in Japan. The story begins as Edamura attempts to con another swindler, a Frenchman named Laurent Thierry, only to discover that he had been tricked.

The plot thickens from this point, and Edamura will have his hands full with all sorts of schemes. The series begins in Japan on Netflix on June 2, and will stick to the following schedule:

  • Case 1 (episodes 1-5): June 2 Case 2 (episodes 6-10): June 9 Case 3 (episodes 11-14): June 16 Case 4: (episode count unknown): “Coming Soon”

Eventually, the show will air all over the world on Netflix, but the timeline for when it will be available outside of Japan is not yet known. Great Pretender looks to be a great new show, though it is a bit strange to see something so happy go lucky compared to the doom and ceaseless despair of Attack on Titan. That is probably for the best, given how the show and manga have progressed over the last few years.
