The ultimate showdown is finally here, and fans have been going nuts trying to decipher the Infinity War trailers before the movie drops on April 27. Thanos is ready for a battle and the Avengers look like they’re having a hard time leveling the playing field. But don’t count our heroes out yet, as there’s more to meets the eye within these Avengers: Infinity War trailers.
Disney and Marvel have played dirty with audiences in the past when it comes to deceiving us with trailers. In Captain America: Civil War, it was made to look like Bucky Barnes was the one to take War Machine out of the sky. Boy, how wrong were we on that one. And don’t even get me started on how deceptive The Last Jedi trailer was this past year. Because of all this forced confusion floating around the internet surrounding Infinity War, it only made sense to try and find some common-threaded spoilers hidden amongst the trailers.
Spoiler Alert!
If you’re not interested in having Avengers: Infinity War spoiled for you but want to know more about it, check out what’s happened in the MCU timeline or see which character might still show up.
Going full-on rabbit hole dive, I managed to extract the most consistent (and left-field) fan-base spoilers and theories — combining them into one neatly packaged treat. And I might have thrown in a spoiler or two of my own. With only weeks until the release of Avengers: Infinity War, find out how many fan-base inspired trailer spoilers you agree with or think are complete rubbish.
And don’t worry, “No raccoons or tree creatures were harmed during the making of this feature. The same cannot be said for handlers of said raccoons and tree creatures.”
20 Cap’s Two Brand New Shields
The last time audiences saw Cap was after he was done putting a hurting on Tony Stark in Captain America: Civil War. Tony, always having to get the last word in, shouts to Cap as he’s walking away.
“That shield does not belong to you. You don’t deserve it! My father made that shield!”
To which Captain America simply drops the shield and continues to walk out. But not before he made a new friend. T’Challa brought Bucky to Wakanda, knowing Shuri could work her magic on him. And when Cap returns to Wakanda, it seems Shuri had a gift for him as well. Two new shields.
While they can’t be thrown (that we know of), they look sleek and likely have a blaster option. They also resemble the design of his original shield in the comics, especially when held side-by-side for defensive measures.
19 Loki Is The First To Go
The first assumption most have when watching the Avengers: Infinity War trailers is that Thanos is squeezing Thor’s head like a cherry tomato. But after spending hours watching frame by frame, I believe he’s not screaming due to physical pain. Thor’s head looks more like it’s being held in place.
Thanos wants Thor to witness the demise of his half-brother, Loki. The screams emanating from the god of lightning are him finally showing his emotions. Since he clearly hasn’t had a chance to shed a tear for his friends who perished during Thor: Ragnarok, because he was too busy cracking jokes.
It makes sense for Loki to go first. After all, this isn’t the first time Loki has perished in the MCU. It’ll also serve as a great motivational factor, driving Thor to complete his next tasks as ruler of the Nine Realms.
18 CGI Misdirects
Disney and Marvel love giving the audience misdirects. Have you not seen The Last Jedi? But never mind Star Wars, they’ve done it with Thor in the recent past. To keep audiences in the dark regarding the ending of Thor: Ragnarok, Thor’s eye was repeatedly given the CGI treatment.
Even the leaked trailer footage from San Diego Comic Con for Avengers: Infinity War showed Thor having two eyes. As did the Thor: Ragnarok trailers when he goes all god of thunder on Hela.
Given that Marvel wants to keep the timeline of Infinity War a secret, so we can’t guess who else perishes — it’s probable that Thanos’ Infinity Gauntlet has undergone CGI treatment. Doing this would keep fans in the dark, unable to see what other Infinity Stones Thanos has acquired. This is especially true when Thanos is going head-to-head with Cap. My money is on the Time Stone and Reality Stone being digitally erased.
17 Q-Ship Movement In Manhattan
Watching the Q-Ship in the trailer, there isn’t much to notice upon first glance. But once certain prime locations are taken into consideration, it’s likely that The Sanctum Sanctorum was not the first stop. Thanos’ ship is first shown over lower Manhattan first, then moving towards Greenwich Village and the Time Stone.
But remember, Stark Towers is in Mid-town Manhattan. And what about the new Avengers facility? It’s located in upper NY, and we know from the trailers that Scarlett Witch and Vision are caught fighting for their lives.
The trailers lead us to think all the action will take place in Greenwich Village, but the truth is revealed in the Q-Ship fly pattern. NY is about to come under siege once again, and the results could be disastrous for one specific character.
16 Three Movies In One
The Russo Brothers learned a few things while directing Captain America: Civil War. It was like their test-run prior to Avengers: Infinity War. One of the issues they ran into was having to cut a bunch of scenes, due to balance with so many Marvel characters on the big screen at one time. To keep Infinity War running smoothly, the Russo Brothers have created three movies in one.
The trailers clearly show three different color tones, and the music hints at different motifs for each group.
Our heroes will be split into 3 teams. One team ends up in Wakanda, the other follows Thor on his adventure, while the others end up on Thanos’ homeworld Titan. The tones for each group are strikingly different, cutting down on the chaos of having too many superheroes on screen at one time.
15 Jarnbjorn Reveal
After losing to Thanos in round one, Thor is determined to get what he needs to take the big purple bully down. Splitting off from the rest of the Guardians of the Galaxy; Rocket, Groot, and Thor head off to the realm of Nidavellir.
Mjolnir was created by the dwarf blacksmiths of Nidavellir.
Given to Thor by Oden, Mjolnir was made from the remnants of a dying star. With Oden no longer around, Thor takes it upon himself to create his own personal weapon. For Thor to make Jarnbjorn, he must first forge it himself using a space forge.
The space forge is the giant hamster wheel-like contraption Thor is standing in the middle of. Jarnbjorn is a combination of hammer and ax, as revealed by leaked toys. Another key thing to note about Jarnbjorn is the handle seems to be made from Groot’s branches.
14 Vision Brings Thanos To Wakanda
I was one of the many who believed Thanos struck at Wakanda due to the possibility of the Soul Stone being located there. But I was wrong. Vision is brought to Wakanda after being injured in NY, which is why Thanos shows up.
Shuri has clearly taken on the challenge of helping Vision, but at what cost? It makes sense that the heroes would use Wakanda as a stronghold against Thanos, and they are clearly meeting the enemy away from the city.
From a tactical standpoint, luring Thanos to Wakanda might be the best option on the table. And Vision is clearly the bait.
But will the technology of Wakanda in conjunction with our famous heroes be enough to thwart Thanos and his quest? Or did the most technologically advanced city in the world just get wiped off the map?
13 Iron Spider Suit Details
Thanks to the trailers, we know Spider-Man gets his new suit back just in the nick of time. Spidey is shown hanging onto Thanos’ Q-Ship as its leaving Manhattan and heading for space. But he’s shown in his homemade costume and is running out of oxygen.
Tony Stark blasts to the rescue, bringing Spider-Man the Iron Spider Armor, so he can breathe in the upper atmosphere of Earth. Which he is shown sporting in another clip from the Avengers: Infinity War trailers.
This means that the Iron Spider Suit contains Nanotechnology just like Iron Man’s Bleeding Edge Armor, and Black Panther’s Suit. In the comics, Spidey’s new suit also contains three mechanical arms. We’re not shown this in the trailer, but there is a small bulge on his back which could be the arms folded up in a circular compacity
12 Return To Knowhere
Audiences were introduced to Knowhere in the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie. It is the head of a celestial being, also known as the home for the Collector. Why is this important?
At the end of Thor: The Dark World, the Asgardians give the Collector the Reality Stone, Since Asgard was already housing the Space Stone.
The Guardians are clearly stepping onto Knowhere in the trailer, and it looks deserted. Is this how we find out Thanos already acquired the Reality Stone from the Collector?
My theory is that this scene takes place in the first act after Thor lands on the Milano’s windshield or possibly before. Either way, it gets the Guardians involved and serves in bringing the Avengers together with the Guardians of the Galaxy.
11 Vision Attacked By Corvus Glaive
It seems Vision is being attacked by a member of the Black Order in the Avengers: Infinity War trailer. But once the tone is lightened in the image, it’s easy to see that the attacker is Corvus Glaive.
Thanks to other footage from the trailer, we also know that Glaive failed.
Vision is shown walking with Cap, Natasha, and Wanda in the new Avengers facility. And he’s clearly injured. But the Mind Stone still seems to be in place. This leads to the plan of taking Vision to Wakanda.
Upon entering Wakanda, the trailer also shows that Vision is still injured. Giving audiences a clear clue regarding the timeline of Avengers: Infinity War. It’s also a way to help Vision while luring Thanos to the best stronghold on the planet.
10 Possible Nebula Sacrifice
We know that Nebula has a huge bone to pick with Thanos and would love to see his purple head on a platter served cold with a side of revenge. But how does Nebula plan on taking Thanos down?
Her lack of appearance in the trailers means she plays a major role in Infinity War.
My theory is that she sacrifices herself to save the others on Titan. It’s a planet she knows all too well, along with Thanos’ weaknesses. She might not be able to beat Thanos on her own, but I think she learns how to extract her revenge in a new way. And thanks to the color schemes, we know she’s on Titan. We also know that Thanos hurls a moon while on Titan. Could this be Nebula’s greatest moment?
9 Ebony Maw Mind Powers
Ebony Maw appears to be going after Dr. Strange in the Avengers: Infinity War trailers, but that’s only a side effect of his true intentions. Maw has the power to read minds, allowing him to extract any information he needs. In the comics, Ebony Maw can make others do his bidding just by speaking to them and can sneak up on an opponent completely undetected.
Dr. Strange not only holds the Time Stone, he’s also probably aware of where the other stones are located.
Hence why going after Dr. Strange is a two-for-one in Thanos’ attack strategy. If Tony Stark had a plan, Maw just threw it out the window. Ebony Maw didn’t need to defeat Dr. Strange, he just needed some information to help Thanos complete his ultimate objective.
8 Dr. Strange And Star-Lord Teamwork
Most of us assumed Dr. Strange would team up with Ant-Man. But the trailers show the old doctor teaming up with another hero instead. Star-Lord has a unique personality. One that usually rubs others the wrong way, much like Dr. Strange.
Tony didn’t take very well to Quill’s idea of becoming the leader, so maybe he teamed up with Strange as a way to show Iron-Man who Star-Lord really is.
“Let’s talk about this plan of yours. I think it’s good, except it sucks. So, let me do the plan, and that way it might be really good.”
Whatever brings Quill and Strange together is worth it, based on the shots we get from the Infinity War trailers. And I can’t wait to see what other tricks the Doctor has in his bag.
7 Iron Man Upgrades And Defeat
Tony Stark has been busy since Captain America: Civil War. And his new armor takes Iron Man to all new heights, but is it enough?
The new Iron Man suit is called Bleeding Edge Armor. Created by using Nanotechnology, much like Black Panther’s suit, the armor comes equipped with a turbo booster engine and wings on the back. While it seems this new tech gives Iron Man a small advantage in NY, the results on Titan show Thanos overcoming the Bleeding Edge Armor without breaking a sweat.
Could this be the end of Tony Stark? The image of Stark with his head hanging in defeat while his new armor crumbles around him doesn’t look promising. We all knew his time left in the franchise was limited but is this how Iron Man goes out?
6 Black Order Introductions
Gamora and Nebula weren’t Thanos’ only adopted children. Big bad purple dude has been plundering planets and stealing kids for quite some time now. And it seems he’s finally got himself a loyal team of followers who go by the name of the Black Order.
The order is led by Corvus Glaive (Thanos’ right-hand man). He has super strength and speed, but his true ability lies within is glaive which allows him to slice through just about anything with true precision. Proxima Midnight is the one holding the spear at Loki, and we’ve already seen Ebony Maw’s abilities. Which leaves the Black Dwarf, renamed Cull Obsidian.
Cull Obsidian is the evil version of the Hulk. His skin in virtually impenetrable and he has superhuman strength. While all these goons can be beaten by the Avengers, they’re not the real problem — only a distraction.
5 Banner Conundrums
In Thor: Ragnarok, we learned that Bruce Banner is having trouble becoming himself once in the form of the Hulk. After being projected back to Earth and crash landing in the Sanctum Sanctorum (which is awfully convenient) Banner is back to himself.
Considering he didn’t want to take on the form of the Hulk initially on Asgard, it’s likely he’ll hold out if he can on while on Earth.
Especially since he is afraid of what might happen to innocents around him. And I don’t think he has any intentions of leaving Earth anytime soon.
Which takes us to Wakanda. Banner is shown standing next to the Hulk Buster Armor, which he’ll wear so he can participate in the fight. But as the trailer shows, he is quickly overrun, causing him to finally become take on the form of the Hulk once again.
4 Mysterious Hand
Many have been speculating whose hand Tony is holding. Most assume this scene takes place while he’s on Titan due to the background color. But I have a different theory.
In Spiderman: Homecoming it was shown that Pepper and Tony are back together, with marriage on the horizon. If NY was to come under attack and Iron Man was being targeted prior to the final destination at the Sanctum Sanctorum, it is possible Pepper may have gotten caught in the crossfire.
Tony losing Pepper Potts would drive him over the edge, causing him to take charge and chase Thanos across the galaxy.
It would also be fitting if Iron Man was to sacrifice himself to save the rest of the team while on Titan. Hence, the images of him looking defeated. Or, the hand could belong to Nebula.
3 Bucky’s New Arm
A moment often overlooked in the Avengers: Infinity War trailers in the reunion between Steve Rogers and Bucky Barnes. Bucky is no longer the Winter Soldier, having been healed by Shuri. And he’s even got a brand-new arm.
Sadly, the trailers don’t show off Bucky using his new arm, but that means it’s got something special up its sleeve. Built with Vibranium, it will be as powerful as his old arm. It should also prove to be more effective.
Upon closer examination, there are gold strains running across the arm. This could be a new form of technology Shuri has used which allows the metal to function like a real arm. Armor limits movement, as do weapons. But what if it was all combined into one?
2 Binary Augmented Retro Framing
I first heard this theory courtesy of NewRockstars and had to share. B.A.R.F. (not the Spaceballs Barf) stands for Binary Augmented Retro Framing. A little ditty that Tony Stark showed off to the world in Captain America: Civil War. The idea behind this technology is that one can recreate a simulation of memories in 3D.
Tony used B.A.R.F. to help himself deal with his parents passing away. But what if it was meant for more? The Russo Brothers made a comment back when Civil War came out that the film contained something that would impact Infinity War. Could B.A.R.F. be that something?
Erik Voss thinks it was used by Tony to replay the events of Thanos acquiring the Space Stone. But how could Stark get this memory? From Banner in NY. The screen above Tony’s wrist shows that he might have been recording Bruce’s account of what happened after leaving Asgard, providing clues towards a much-needed game plan. But hey, it is just a theory.
1 Soul Stone Possible Reveal
Thanks to Andrew Dyce from ScreenRant, there’s a new and logical theory as to where the Soul Stone has been hiding.
Many have been thinking it’s hiding in Wakanda soil (myself included) while others felt that Cap somehow got a hold of it. But in the comics, the Soul Stone was actually lost. As in current location unknown. But if Thanos has the Time and Space Stones, then he can open a portal to where he last knew the Soul Stone was (as in going back in time). If Thanos doesn’t know where the Soul Stone was last, it could be likely that Dr. Strange did. Which explains Maw’s mental interrogation.
The other theory Dyce has is that Thanos may already have the Soul Stone, and the fighting we see in the trailer on Titan is similar to B.A.R.F. (meaning they’ve all been duped and trapped).
I am more in favor of the first theory, as it lines up nicely with the timeline of events we’ve been shown in the trailers for Avengers: Infinity War. What are your thoughts and theories, and how many spoilers in the Infinity War trailer do you think I got wrong? Make sure to comment and let me know.
