Just last night, indie developer Edmund McMillen provided an update on Twitter about the various projects he’s currently involved in. The two biggest, The Binding of Isaac: Repentance and Mewgenics, were given some concrete details that are both good and bad. In the good pile, Mewgenics is now in active development. In the bad pile, Repentance has been delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic.
That shouldn’t come as a surprise, but it does still sting. The original goal for release was the “end of summer,” but development has lagged a little due to the pandemic. McMillen didn’t make a firm statement about when it will be available and there is still a chance it could release in late summer. It just doesn’t seem likely.
As for Mewgenics, the long-gestating game is finally making progress. McMillen even shared off a screenshot that shows a radically different game from its initial inception. The title looks to be adapting something of a Tactical RPG style in the vein of something like Fire Emblem. It will be fun seeing where the team goes with things.
Further on in the Twitter thread, McMillen updated fans on his card game, The Binding of Isaac: Four Souls, and The Legend of Bum-bo. Four Souls’ latest expansion is roughly 90% designed and will be entering its final stages once Repentance is out. Bum-bo, meanwhile, is being handed off to a new development team that will be porting it to different platforms and continuing to update the PC version.
Overall, it seems like a lot of good things are in store. While McMillen doesn’t exclusively work alone on projects, his teams are often very small. This leads to games that are fairly intimate, but it also has the side effect of making updates take longer. The Binding of Isaac has felt this the most, with Repentance being teased for more than a year now.
Mewgenics, as well, has almost become a white whale of sorts. Originally primed to be a Team Meat production, the game has undergone many different shifts over the years. It’s nice to learn that development hasn’t ceased.
