Fans of the teen drama The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina were left disappointed this week when Netflix announced Sabrina would end with the upcoming fourth season. But all hope isn’t lost as it seems the series may return to its comic book roots with a fifth season in graphic novel form.

Whilst Chilling Adventures of Sabrina does share many of the same characters with its namesake Sabrina the Teenage Witch, the Netflix show is a much darker supernatural take on the iconic TV series. The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina began as part of the Archie comics universe from Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, who wrote both the comic and the television adaptation. He is also responsible for the Riverdale and Katy Keene shows which all co-exist in a shared universe.

The final episodes of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina will air later this year, but following that, fans can also look forward to the planned fifth season still coming to life. Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa took to Twitter to announce the news that the fifth season originally titled “Witch War” will continue in the graphic novel series.

For a long time fans had hope that the two Archie shows would cross over, but conflicting production schedules and studio rights kept anything significant from happening. This latest announcement does finally confirm that an official Sabrina-Riverdale crossover was planned for the fifth season, but will unfortunately not be realized on screen. But with Riverdale still on the air there is the possibility for Sabrina characters to make an appearance in future seasons of the sister show.

It isn’t uncommon for cancelled TV shows to continue their runs in comic books, with Firefly and Buffy The Vampire Slayer both doing this to some success. Even though Chilling Adventures of Sabrina has been cancelled it still has potential to live a lot longer in its comic book run.

The last season of The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina will air on Netflix later in 2020.
