Grand Theft Auto V came out in 2013 and since then has sold over 85 million copies to become the best selling game of all time. No doubt that has something to do with it being released on the PS4 and Xbox One after those systems launched and later on the PC. Another reason is that people eat up the GTA games when they come out because Rockstar (the developer) has basically put the series on a 5 year cycle, so we don’t get one very often.

Since GTA V took the gaming world by storm, it’s lead fans to come up with some theories about what they want/expect out of the a follow-up game. It’s always a big deal when the location of the next GTA game is revealed. Red Dead Redemption was rumored to be a GTA game before they officially revealed it to be a new franchise. So when people think of a new GTA game, the location becomes the top priority most of the time. Going back to San Andreas was awesome in GTA V and going back to Vice City has been a long time rumor that we’ll cover on the list below.

Below is a list of 15 crazy fan theories that might come true. People either thought these up or have been rumors for a while about GTA 6 or whatever they choose to call it. Some entries make sense to move the franchise forward and some are just outright crazy. So let’s get to the list!

15 The World Is Yours

Vice City has long been considered the best GTA game of the PlayStation 2 era ‘cause everyone loves the 80s, right? The colors, the music, Scarface, the… music. Ever since GTA IV, it has been in the rumor mill that Rockstar would take the series back there with a numbered GTA game. Vice City Stories came out on the PSP (PlayStation Portable) in 2006 and later on the PS2 in 2007 but that was a side story and a lot of people didn’t play that.

Going back to Vice City in modern times would be interesting since it is in Miami. Rockstar has said that going back there in modern times away from the 80s Miami vibe  might not work but they haven’t fully closed it off either. GTA 6 being set in the 80s would be fine with a lot of gamers though, since the past two games have been set in modern times.

14 Disco Isn’t Dead

Having the next GTA set in the 70s could be incredible! We’ve seen what Rockstar can do with the 80s and the 90s with San Andreas, and seeing the disco era tied in with crime drama and stupid humor sounds great. This has been a fan theory/rumor for a while now since they have tackled other eras with other games like L.A. Noire and Red Dead Redemption. The only question would be what city would it take place in. New York City was a big crime city in the 70s, but Liberty City is basically the GTA version of it, so that might not work.

Another approach could be all the killers that popped up during that era. The Manson Family, The Zodiac Killer, Gacy, Ted Bundy, Son of Sam, and the Hillside Strangler. Although all of those cases are serious, seeing a humorous/different side of them could be interesting. The killer was handled well in GTA V.

13 Do You Want To Play A Game?

The rumor about the GTA series going to Carcer City has been a thing since Manhunt came out in 2003. Manhunt focuses on James Earl Cash being forced into killing for an anonymous director. The director has dirt on him and will give it to Liberty City Supreme Court if he does not comply. So Carcer City is a place in the GTA universe, and going there could be a thing. There’s a line in Grand Theft Auto V where Michael refers to a job he did in Carcer City, so that just furthers that the city is part of the canon.

The main real city tied to Carcer is Detroit, and having a GTA game set there would fit in perfectly. It does run the risk of being same-ish to the other games and not branching out though. Later on in this list we will get into how this city could tie into a bigger picture, though.

12 Controllers Cost How Much?

Since Grand Theft Auto Online has become a monster, it would kind of make sense to put co-op in the single player of the next GTA game. The Saints Row games have been doing it for a while now, and most people thought GTA V would have it since there were going to be three playable characters. There were a few missions in GTA V where you switch between all three characters and would’ve worked well for co-op.

That is, if they choose to have multiple main characters again. Rockstar traditionally likes to have each game feel completely different, and that’s why they made games like Bully and… Table Tennis. They did put the heists into GTA Online and that could be a good taste of what future co-op GTA could be like. Because you do have to be coordinated and not be an idiot and shoot your friend in the getaway car, even though you know you would at least once.

11 I Want This, That, And That Over There

Having a great lead character in the past GTA games has been great! Playing as Niko Bellic in GTA IV, and being Michael, Franklin, and Trevor in GTA V was a great meld of personalities. Being able to play as that guy in GTA III… the guy who got shot and then got arrested… it was cool being that guy. Something the fans have been wanting for a while is to be able to create a main character for single player. Since you can create a character from scratch for GTA Online, putting that option in the single player could be a thing for GTA 6. One downside to creating a character is that they might result in a silent protagonist that would just be a bunch of head nodding and confused looks. Or they could go the Saints Row route and just customize the crap out of everything from the voice to looks.

10 Give Me Your Lunch Money!

When Bully came out in 2006, people wondered if there was a connection to the GTA universe and if there would ever be any crossovers. Well, a fan theory does exist that GTA 6 could take place in the same city/area that Bully is set in. The game is set at a private boarding school in New England called Bullworth Academy. There is a mention of the school during one of the TV shows in GTA IV in which it does show the school, so that confirmed that the game did take place in the same universe as the GTA games.

Having a New England setting for a GTA could lead to some interesting content, and playing up the small town atmosphere would be different. Boston would be a more realistic setting, like in Fallout 4, and we could just have the New England stuff alongside it. Maybe have a cheating football team mission?

9 Digital Bling

This entry is more for the trophy/achievement hunters out there. Playing through GTA III, Vice City, and San Andreas on the PS2, a ton of people used cheat codes. It was so much easier to just tap a few buttons and get full heath/armor to complete a mission. The great thing about it was that there were no consequences to doing it. Well, when GTA IV came out, activating a cheat disabled some trophies/achievements and gave an incentive to not use them. GTA V disabled them all together. Being able to go back to the glory days of using cheats and still not losing the ability to get a platinum trophy is something GTA 6 could bring to the table. Or we could at least be able to complete the main story with them on and have to disable them to do all the side stuff. It’s not a big deal to most, but would be huge for others.

8 What Does It All Mean?

This is what you would call a stretch of a theory, but this stuff is in the game and could very well mean something, so let’s talk about it.

There are some doors at the Los Santos International Airport in GTA V that have numbers written on them. Now, these doors only have two sets of numbers on them: 2013 and 2021. Since there are only two sets, it’s lead people to start thinking that they might mean something. GTA V was released in 2013 so that covers that one. But what could 2021 mean? Some think that could be a predetermined release date for the next GTA game, or at least the next big Rockstar game, but Read Dead Redemption 2 is coming out in 2018 so it’s not that. These numbers could literally mean nothing and simply be code that just happened to churn out numbers that looked like dates, or maybe not.

7 Johnson… Carl Johnson

There was a game that came out in 2002 called The Getaway and it was an open-world GTA-type game set in London. Since then, people have been theorizing about having a GTA set outside of the United States and having it be London. There are a lot of good British gangster movies to use as a backdrop and take inspiration from like Snatch or Layer Cake. The atmosphere would be different than all the other games and the amount of car variety could be nuts! There hasn’t really been anything in any of the GTA games that would lead to a game outside of the USA, other than drawings of cities on the sides of buildings in GTA V, but there are a few different cities like that, so… Dan Houser (one of the co-founders of Rockstar) has even said that if they did a game in London that it probably wouldn’t be a GTA game, but you never know!

6 I Remember You

Another popular fan theory is that eventually all of the other main characters in the GTA franchise will appear in the same game at some point, and GTA 6 could indeed be that game. Because, if you think about it, that’s 5 massive mainline GTA entries and a few side story games at this point. It would be cool to have them all as quest givers and do a set of missions with each. They could actually be a part of the story and it would make sense and not be a mess. Or it’d be nice to even just have a character like Claude from GTA III stay silent and only have a mission or two with him.

The only downside with doing something like that would be Rockstar sacrificing new characters for older ones just for the sake of doing it. Because unless there’s a good story reason that they’re all together, then it could be a step back from a storyline perspective.

5 What’s The Cheat Code For The Master Sword?

This list is being written at the end of 2017 and the Nintendo Switch is on fire right now after finally getting back to putting out AAA third-party games on a Nintendo system. L.A. Noire just released for the system and that means that Rockstar is willing to put one of their open world games on there. If GTA V and/or Red Dead Redemption 2 ever make their way to the system then that might confirm this, but putting the next GTA game on the Switch would be huge! Now, it would have to be toned down from a PS4/Xbox One performance, but a handheld GTA would sell well and give that version an edge over the others. It would probably need to come out after the other versions, but that could give big fans of the game a valid reason to double dip and buy it twice.

4 When This Baby Hits 88 Miles Per Hour…

There’s a theory about the next GTA game that involves time travel. Now, I know that sounds crazy even for a GTA game, but it’s not really time travel like getting into a phone booth and going to a different time period. The theory is that the story would connect over the span of a few decades, and you would jump from one to another with different, but connected, characters. If handled right, this could be a revolution in storytelling for games. It would be like how Goodfellas or The Departed told their stories. Or even like Godfather it could span a few generations.

They could follow a family name until the last of its name dies or passes it on. GTA protagonists rarely die so maybe not have them die unless there’s a mission like the last mission in GTA V where you get a choice to kill main characters or not.

3 Did You Kill Her?

L.A. Noire has recently been released for the PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch so that game is getting some attention lately, and the rumors of the next GTA possibly being set in that time period are as well. L.A. Noire takes place in a crime filled 1940s Los Angeles and has the look of a GTA city just without the free roam. You pretty much just drive from one crime scene to another.

Having GTA 6 set in this time period would be a bit of a chance though seeing as how all the GTA games have been set in time periods with fast cars. It might have the feel of the Mafia games, and the driving in those games feels kind of off. The weapons and locations would be very interesting though, and that’s really what matters. There were also a good bit of interesting murder cases happening in LA during this time.

2 Can I Fast Travel?

Another fan theory out there that’s kind of crazy but awesome at the same time is GTA 6 having the map be the entire USA. This would be insane, especially seeing how Rockstar loves to put so much detail in their games and hidden locations… plus the driving would be more intense than it was in San Andreas.

A cool thing they could do though is put all the locations that have ever been in a GTA game before. Like, a portion of the story could take place in Vice City, and another be in Liberty City, even throw Carcer City in there. The game The Crew tried this a few years ago and came up short on delivering a believable map of the USA. Granted, that was a driving game, but still. The game would more than likely take up so much space on a hard drive though, because GTA V takes up 66GB on a PS4 as of now.

1 Be Careful Diana, They Do Not Deserve You

Having a female protagonist in GTA 6 is literally something that everyone wants! The rumors about playing as a female go back years and a lot of people figured that one of the playable characters in GTA V was going to be female. Now, the characters we got are awesome and fully realized, but getting to finally take control of a powerful woman character is something the GTA series needs. There have been some female characters that you get missions from and interact with but not many have been in a place of power.

Having a singular female lead and putting a few other female side characters around her could work so well. The recent Tomb Raider games have show how to properly have a strong female lead and they could take few pages from those games, outside of raiding tombs and dealing with mythical creatures… or hey, maybe just put all that into GTA 6 anyway!
