Marcus Lehto, the mastermind behind Master Chief just opened up about the origins of the games and character in an interview with IGN.

Bungie’s Halo franchise is a military sci-fi first person shooter series that has a long history of online popularity. The main plot of the games revolves around an intergalactic war between the alien alliance, the Covenant, and the rest of humanity. The central figure of this war and story is Master Chief Petty Officer John-117, or Master Chief for short, a Spartan, better known as a supersoldier. The supersoldier character is shrouded in mystery, and little more than the back of his head has ever been seen without armor, but he is one of the most well recognized characters in video game history.

And that’s all thanks to designer Marcus Lehto.

Lehto is the co-creator of the Halo universe, and is credited as the creator of this iconic character. Lehto talked the early days of the character and the games in this latest IGN Unfiltered interview. He mentions the big dreams he and the team had for Master Chief, even during the crude days of the genetically engineered warrior’s polygon animation. Some incarnation of Master Chief has been part of the story since it was just Lehto and fellow developer, Jason Jones, working on building up the world and characters and story. Lehto talks about the progression of the character’s look along with the physics behind the games’ vehicles and items, as well as how things shifted perspective as development went on.

Thanks to Lehto, Xbox has not only the most popular character the console has ever produced, but one known the world over.
