On the eve of the Oscar nominations, the critics have given their vote. Quite literally as the 25th Annual Critics Choice Awards is in the history books—along with its diverse selection of winning films and television shows.
The big winners of the night include Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood, Parasite, 1917, and Joker. The Quentin Tarantino love letter to 1960s Tinseltown notably pulled a surprise win for Best Picture after missing out on the Best Director prize. Not that Tarantino went home otherwise empty handed, as he picked up the Critics Choice for Best Original Screenplay, as did Brad Pitt for Best Supporting Actor, and Barbara Ling and Nancy Haigh for Best Production Design.
Yet in possibly the biggest surprise of the night, Parasite’s Bong Joon-ho and 1917’s Sam Mendes split the Best Director award in a tie. It is not a surprise that Mendes, who is looking increasingly like an Oscar favorite, picked up the award, but Korean filmmaker Bong also doing so is. A happy one at that for this writer, who is a member of the Critics Choice Association. Joker, meanwhile, earned awards for Best Original Score and Best Actor, further cementing Joaquin Phoenix’s frontrunner status in that category.
Overall, the Critics Choice Awards are noteworthy in the Oscar race when they further underline existing narratives, and Phoenix’s flashy turn as the Clown Prince of Crime is one of the most intriguing, as a week ago Adam Driver looked like a strong competitor for his work in Marriage Story. Similarly, the critics splitting Best Director and Best Picture between Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood and 1917 (plus Parasite) likewise gives credence to the emerging narrative from last week’s Golden Globes: the Oscars Best Picture race appears to be between two old school epics from respected auteurs.
Other major wins include Renée Zellweger taking home Best Actress for her work in Judy, Laura Dern picking up Marriage Story’s sole win, in the Best Supporting Actress category, and Greta Gerwig winning for Best Adapted Screenplay for Little Women.
The full list of winners, including Regina King and Jean Smart winning for their performances in Watchmen, can be read below. Winners are bolded.
