Receiving its roots in 1984, The Dark Eye - one of Germany’s most popular pen-and-paper RPGs - is receiving the digital treatment and making its way to PC next month, working closely with the game’s rights owner, Ulisses Spiele.
On June 6th, The Dark Eye: Book of Heroes will be released on Steam, bringing its Dungeons & Dragons-style of gameplay to gamers’ PCs.
In The Dark Eye: Book of Heroes, players will create their character - including their own backstory - and head out as a lone wolf or as a team (of up to four other players in online co-op) in search of action, adventure, and (of course) loot, as they make their way through the land of Aventuria. Elves, half-elves, dwarves, and humans will make up the playable races, while players can choose from 12 different professions, including Assassin, Mercenary, Blessed one of Rondra, Knight, or Black Magician.
A new gameplay trailer was released this week, highlighting the Black Boar Inn - the most famous inn in all of Aventuria - and what players can expect from the game’s main hub.
Interacting with the innkeeper will, or at least should be the first thing players will probably do, as is pretty standard for most tabletop RPG taverns and inns. From there, players can hire henchmen (if playing solo), interact with the fortune teller, familiarize themselves with the history and lore of Aventuria, buy and sell goods, forge weapons and craft items, and, most importantly, set up their next quest by picking from a list, joining up with friends, or even creating their own adventure.
In The Dark Eye: Book of Heroes itself seems reminiscent of other dungeon crawlers, especially Dungeon Siege, which was a title released way back in 2002. That’s not a slam either, as Dungeon Siege was the dungeon crawler that I cut my teeth on that made me fall in love with the genre.
The Dark Eye: Book of Heroes will be available for $29.99 on Steam on June 9th.
