The award-winning German tabletop roleplaying game The Dark Eye has finally been brought to digital space. The Dark Eye: Book of Heroes has launched on Steam for PC. Developed by Random Potion, rights owner Ulisses Spiele, and published by Wild River Games, fans of the tabletop version can now experience an epic adventure through the mystical lands of Aventuria through the comfort of their favorite gaming computer.
“We are incredibly pleased to launch Book of Heroes and bring the excellent The Dark Eye license to life digitally,” said Marc Wardenga, CEO of Wild River Games in the official press release. “The Dark Eye is the perfect setting for fans of old-school RPGs, and the team at Random Potion has worked hard to recreate the joy of playing it on the tabletop, on PC.”
The Dark Eye tabletop roleplaying game launched back in 1984, and quickly became the most successful German roleplaying game ever, even outselling Dungeons & Dragons in its home market. Book of Heroes holds on to its tabletop roots while also firmly retaining the feel of classic and modern computer roleplaying games such as Baldur’s Gate, Neverwinter Nights, and Divinity: Original Sin.
Players can now experience the immersive world of The Dark Eye fully in the digital age. According to the press release, Book of Heroes brings players almost the same opportunities as the tabletop version, including multiplayer and cooperative modes, and an expansive roleplaying adventure story. Just as in the tabletop version, players can “hack, slash, sneak, steal” their way through the arcane and mysterious lands of Aventuria.
As in The Dark Eye tabletop version, Book of Heroes includes a robust character creation system that makes use of Inrah cards. In The Dark Eye lore, these 121 cards are used by the fortunetellers of Aventuria, and depict artistic scenes from the life and history of the realm. The Inrah cards allow players to choose from numerous skills, backgrounds, and professions during character creation.
Drawing on thirty-six years of The Dark Eye source material, Book of Heroes allows players to choose from four classes and twelve different professions. Characters and classes also have “customizable appearances and unique quests, tasks, and agendas,” according to the press release.
Solo play is available, of course, allowing players to adventure with a virtual non-player character party of their choosing. Players can also team up online with up to four other players and take on the campaign cooperatively.
“With over 35 years of tabletop evolution to reference, The Dark Eye: Book of Heroes is the perfect setting for fans of old-school RPGs, and the team at Random Potion has done an incredible job of bringing it to life on the PC”, said Wardenga.
The Dark Eye: Book of Heroes is available on Steam for $29.99.
