A new sofa based on Ditto the Pokemon is available in Japan and it’s either cute or cursed, depending on views on sentient furniture.

Ditto was one of the original 151 Pokemon from Pokemon Red & Blue. It had the ability to naturally polymorph into other substances and living beings. Ditto was the only Pokemon outside of Mew that could learn the Transform move, allowing it to copy the appearance and move set of an enemy Pokemon. This led to theories that Ditto and Mew were connected, and that the entire Ditto species was composed of failed clones of Mew. Transform isn’t a very good attack, as it takes a round to activate, but Ditto is still one of the most highly sought Pokemon in the series, due to how useful it is for breeding Pokemon.

The Pokemon Company is known for creating strange merchandise involving some of the most popular creatures in the series, like the recent Metapod sleeping bags. One of the strangest pieces of Pokemon merchandise is the Ditto sofa, which can be purchased from Cellutane in Japan.

The Ditto bead sofa costs 25,990 yen (roughly £185/$250). Unfortunately, Cellutane doesn’t deliver internationally, so you might have to jump through some hoops in order to purchase one. The sofa is 640mm/25 inches tall and 950mm/37 inches wide. The most striking aspect of the Ditto sofa is its wide grin and the suggestion that it transformed into the shape of a piece of furniture, just so its trainer could sit down. There is a reason why most furniture lacks a face outside of Wonderland, as there is something unsettling about Ditto’s black eyes staring at you from across the room.

Ditto’s face has been used as a joke in different Pokemon merchandise in the past, as it tries to masquerade as other Pokemon to fit in, but you can still tell it’s a Ditto. This is the first time that Ditto has pretended to be a piece of furniture, and if it’s popular, then it might finally earn a new career outside of being a broodmare for other Pokemon.
