Printer Filament is a rare material in The Division 2 that is used in crafting to create mods for gear and skills. Not only is it a purple tier item but it is also rare in where it is found, coming from one specific place in the game. But before players begin searching for Printer Filament, the first step is to reach Level 10 in The Division 2 and unlock Skill Mods.

Unfortunately, Printer Filament does not appear out in the open world in chests nor from completing missions or activities. However, that does not mean that players should not be looting as much as possible out in the open world, because that is exactly what they should be doing in the search of Printer Filament. That’s because this important item comes from Armor Mods and Skill Mods, or more specifically, from deconstructing Armor Mods and Skill Mods. And considering the fact that other items tend to drop more frequently than Mods, players will want to be looting and completing as many activities as possible in search of them.

Once players have a collection of Mods that they are fine with deconstructing, they need to go into their Mods menu in their inventory (the gear icon) and hold the corresponding button to deconstruct the selected Mod, which will always deconstruct into one Printer Filament. This is the only way to get this valuable material, and with it being an indirect source (i.e. cannot be discovered directly from The Division 2’s world), players will want to loot as much as possible in order to collect Mods that they can deconstruct.

It will also be good to be thinking about this while players level as well, because players may not want to put a Mod on every piece of gear they have when it is not impacting their game in a major way, which could result in a loss of Mods that could better serve as a source of Printer Filament. Likewise, players may also want to avoid selling any Mods to vendors for this very same reason. But like any RPG, that choice will be left up to the player.

The Division 2 is available now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
