Speaking exclusively to GameSpot, developers Artefacts Studios confirmed that The Dungeon of Naheulbeuk: The Amulet of Chaos will be released August 27. The tactical RPG will arrive via Steam, the Epic Games Store and GOG.
The Amulet of Chaos boasts a variety of Middle-earth inspired races featuring Rangers, Elves, Dwarfs, Barbarians, Magicians, Ogre’s and good ole Thieves. Its colorful graphics is immediately eye-catching in its isometric form and gameplay promises an entertaining journey. The characters and animals seen in the trailer wear goofy facial expressions and promote a lighthearted story within this heroic fantasy. The in-game team are described as “clumsy heroes” on Steam who will no doubt lead the story mode into comical encounters.
The Naheulbeuk lore was created by French author John Long who created the fantasy world for audio originally. What started as a popular audio comedy series that harnessed the comedy of role-playing games and fantasy adventure troupes soon caught the attention of developers Artefacts Studios. The studio and publishers Dear Villagers stated in a press release that the game will feature an “adaptive difficulty system” that will allow the game’s story mode to be enjoyed by gamers of all levels. The game’s interpretation of Lang’s Audio series will be the first time that his material has been broadcast in the English language.
The turn-based game has already received praise for its charming visuals and buoyant take on the usual dangerous heroes adventure. Fans have compared the RPG’s visuals and gameplay to the Divinity series as well as its highly-saturated color palette. Other comments on Dear Villagers’ YouTube page showed concern for the game’s ability to support the English language translation. One user commented on the Rayman 3 blunder that failed to bring the gravitas of the French voice actors to the English dub.
The trailer for Amulet of Chaos previews the main villain Zangdar and shows the various dungeons that are available for players to explore and conquer. There will be seven players available, each one with a unique set of skills to be weaponized in battle. Skill points will unlock for each character and strategies can be composed based around the characters skill tree and how they interact with each other.
The world of Naheulbeuk appears intriguing at first glance, designed to look and feel like the perfect PC game. The game’s ’nightmare mode’ is said to be the hardest difficulty level where skill is vital, but it’s a nightmare that promises some laughs along the way.
