The second week of September has drawn to a close and brought some amazing games with it, as well as a number of high-profile delays brought on by the pandemic.

TheGamer has been playing and dissecting each of the major new titles as they have been released. These are our reviews of some of the biggest releases of September 2020, including the remaster no one asked for, the remake everyone wanted, and a possible rival to the mighty Fortnite franchise.

Kingdoms Of Amular: Re-Reckoning - 3.5 Stars

It’s not unusual for older games to be remastered for modern systems, yet there was seemingly no demand for an updated version of Kingdoms of Amular - an action RPG whose troubled development was far more interesting than the content of the game. Kingdom of Amular: Re-Reckoning is an upgraded version of a game that launched on the PS3/Xbox 360, yet it barely looks any better now than it did then, and the game still has numerous technical issues. The story of Kingdoms of Amular: Re-Reckoning is about as generic as a fantasy game gets, but the gameplay is decent enough and it has a lengthy runtime for people who want to put in the effort to explore its boilerplate world.

Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2 - 5 Stars

The Tony Hawk series saw a steady decline in quality over time, but it has been brought back to its glory days thanks to an incredible remake of the first two entries in the series. Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1+2 revamps the levels in a way that makes them feel both new and familiar at the same time while retaining the incredible soundtracks that had the fans singing years earlier. The gameplay is still as razor-sharp as it always was, while the addition of online modes makes it even easier than ever to play with friends. Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1+2 is a must-have game, especially for fans of the genre.

The Sims 4: Journey To Batuu - 3 Stars

The worlds of The Sims 4 and Star Wars have been brought together in this latest DLC pack for the game. The Sims 4: Journey to Batuu is more mission-based than regular Sims outings, as the player gets to create their own Star Wars-style character and embroil them in the struggle between the Resistance and The First Order. Whether you like this game will be determined by how much you love Star Wars and how fine you are with bucking the traditional Sims gameplay, though, it’s assumed you’re going to be a Star Wars fan if you buy it in the first place.

Spellbreak - 4 Stars

Initially described by pundits as Fortnite with wizards, Spellbreak is a battle royale starring mages who battle each other for gear. The combat system in Spellbreak has tons of options, with different character classes possessing powers that can be combined in unique ways. The game also has a fairly involved loot system. The only major issues are the map being too big to accommodate the number of players in each game, and the progression/cosmetics system still needs some work. The game is in a rough state, but it’s early days yet, and it’s worth keeping an eye on.
