James Buckley, a British actor known for his roles in the BAFTA-winning sitcom The Inbetweeners, Doctor Who and White Gold, is considering giving up his acting gig to become a full-time gamer on Twitch and YouTube.
Buckley, who says he’s grown tired of celebrity life, wants to focus his energy on expanding his Twitch gaming channel, Completed It Mate, after consulting with several sponsors. He told The Sun, “I’m not that excited about the industry and I haven’t been for a while. I’m really enjoying the stuff I’m doing with my Twitch channel.”
Now that he feels he understands the gaming business, he wants to get serious and set new goals for himself. The 32-year-old actor, who first came to fame playing a teenager on the coming-of-age sitcom, followed up three seasons on the show with the record-breaking feature film, The Inbetweeners Movie and the box-office hit, The Inbetweeners 2 in 2011 and 2014, respectively.
According to Business of Apps, on average, expert streamers can earn between $3,000 to $5,000 a month playing around 40 hours a week, not including ad revenue, which averages $250 for every 100 subscribers.
After several other film and television ventures, including a guest appearance earlier this on The Great Stand Up to Cancer Bake Off, in which he was voted star baker, Buckley has shifted his focus to gaming. In 2016, he started a YouTube channel also called Completed It Mate. He now has 419,000 subscribers on YouTube and 173,260 followers on Twitch.
On his Twitch channel, he has collaborated with other gamers and even reunited with his Inbetweeners castmates. As a lifelong gamer, he was drawn to the content being created on Twitch and YouTube, adding that it’s been a while since he’s seen something that new or fresh on television. Buckley, who has been married to wife Clair Meek, a Scottish model, since 2012, has two sons, Harrison and Jude.
During the COVID-19 lockdown, Buckley has also begun filming messages for fans. According to The Sunday Times, the actor has filmed over 3,500 videos. At £41.50 a pop, he has made more than £145,000 over the last four months.
