With the coronavirus seeing millions confined to their homes while the pandemic continues, it seems a number of major events have canceled or postponed their yearly gatherings in an effort to prevent exposure. However, it seems a small number of annual staples are looking to find ways to still host their events through the power of the internet, with the likes of this year’s WrestleMania and Geoff Keighley’s Summer Game Fest keeping fans entertained in innovative and exciting ways.
Another event that recently hosted its annual showcase in a new, virtual format was Nickelodeon’s Kids’ Choice Awards, which came together to celebrate a number of major stars and media products aimed towards younger audiences. Alongside the likes of The Rock, SpongeBob SquarePants, Millie Bobby Brown, Avengers: Endgame, and David Dobrik all winning big awards, two other categories voted upon were “favorite game” and “favorite gamer.”
The former was a decision that seemed to be unanimously celebrated online, with Minecraft picking up the award for the best game. Not only has the creative sandbox title picked up steam again in the last year, with PewDiePie and other YouTubers reawakening the game’s dormant fanbase, but its a release that everyone can agree is eternally evolving and bettering itself. When it comes to games that almost anyone can enjoy, Minecraft is without a doubt one of the most popular and beloved picks, especially with younger audiences looking for a game that allows them to unleash their limitless imaginations. However, the choice of favorite gamer did leave a more sour taste with viewers.
Picking up the coveted trophy for a second year running was SSsniperWolf, who’s victory over a number of more popular and well-liked streamers did seem to stir controversy. Beating out DanTDM, GamerGirl, Ninja, and PrestonPlayz, SSSniperWolf caught a lot of flack from fans, many of whom expressed their disappointment on Twitter. “SSsniperwolf just won best gamer on the nickelodeon kids choice awards and I don’t know what’s worse: the fact i’m willingly watching the kcas at 2am or that i’m genuinely irritated by the fact she won,” one user wrote, while another simply tweeted out “I forgot sssniperwolf existed.”
Hosted by Victoria Justice, the Kid’s Choice Awards also saw a reunion between the cast of Avengers: Endgame and a number of high profile celebrities tune in digitally. While SSSniperwolf’s win might not have gone down as well with viewers, Minecraft’s big win will no doubt be seen as a worthy win by thousands of fans.
