The Last Of Us’ success proves that gamers want a good gameplay system and a solid story that makes them feel something. Even if you’re a backseat gamer or you aren’t a big zombie fan, this game has something for everyone. In 2020 the sequel came out, becoming one of the best-selling PS4 games as well as the fastest-selling PS4 exclusive.

However, things quickly didn’t go as planned. First, the game had multiple delays, then some major plot points leaked. Still, Naughty Dog released The Last Of Us II back in June, receiving very positive reviews from critics but a polarizing reaction from fans. Many players found in Reddit a place to share their more unpopular opinions.

10 Dina And Jessie Ruin The Story

One new addition to The Last Of Us sequel is the diverse cast of new characters, like Ellie’s new pals Jessie and Dina. The latter is very important as she later becomes Ellie’s love interest and is one of the few people who can talk some sense into her.

While these characters had a positive reception, some players think that their personal stories lacked depth. As TLOF II’s main storyline progresses, you don’t learn much about Jessie apart from the fact that he’s Dina’s ex and baby daddy. While Naughty Dog develops Dina’s and Ellie’s relationship more, some fans felt that it didn’t feel as genuine as the relationship Ellie had with Riley, and those two weren’t even a couple.

9 Joel Deserved What Happened To Him

Back in April, some of the game’s cutscene leaked and revealed significant plot points. One thing that players learned from these leaks was Joel’s death.

Joes was the first game protagonist, so fans spent a whole game in his shoes, which made them attached to him and his relationship with Ellie. However, the first’s game final scene shows a very violent and out-of-control side of Joel. A certain Redditor thinks this last moment justifies Joel’s horrible death in the sequel.

8 Manny Is A Likeable Character

Manny was part of Abby’s group of friends and one of the people who were there the day Joel killed all those Fireflies. Many players distinctly remember this character as the one who spits on Joel’s dead body, and that also wanted to kill Ellie when she was searching for Joel.

Still, one Redditor thinks that Manny is a character that grows on you. Manny’s sincere loyalty to Abby’s friendship makes him a redeemable person. Sure, Abby had other people she called friends, but their actions were questionable, like Owen, who flirted with Abby mercilessly leading up to him cheating on his pregnant girlfriend with, you guessed it, Abby.

7 Jesse’s Death Is Completely Fine

When players first meet Jesse, he is part of Ellie’s groups of friends, Dina’s ex, and the patrol group leader back in Jackson. He appears in some parts of the game, acting as a supporting character in The Last Of Us II. Later on, he joins Dina and Ellie in the search for revenge.

While his story arc wasn’t that evolve, Jesse was a friendly face, and players were shocked when Abby shot him in the forehead, killing him instantly. Yet, a certain Redditor thinks Jesse’s death is acceptable. They point out that the game narrative shows that no one is special or above anyone else. All the characters are humans, so in that sense, Jesse dying is expected by the standard of TLOU’S world.

6 Gameplay with Ellie Is Boring

Nobody was expecting The Last Of Us II to have two protagonists you can play as. For about 12-hours, you play as Ellie in her path to find Abby and get revenge on Joel’s death. Then you switch on to Abby and learn a little bit more about her side of things.

Although most players stop enjoying the game when Abby’s part starts, someone on Reddit argues that Ellie’s role is so dull, and you have to put so much effort into finding Abby while equipped with the worst weapons, and you also have to solve a lot of time-consuming puzzles. They are not the only ones to think this way, as other Redditors responded in the same post, saying that Abby gets the best sections in the game, like the Rat King boss fight.

5 Mel Got What She Deserved

Mel was Abby’s very pregnant friend and a supporting character in her story. Later in the game, Ellie broke into the aquarium where Mel and her baby daddy, Owen, were. After holding them at gunpoint, things went south, and Ellie killed both of them, only realizing that Mel was pregnant.

Seeing as Ellie’s girlfriend, Dina, was also pregnant at the time. This murder hit players, and Ellie, pretty hard. However, someone on Reddit thinks Mel got what she deserved as she was involved with Joel’s death. This user goes on saying that just like Mel, Abby should’ve died as well.

4 Druckmann Isn’t A Bad Writer

After parts of the story leaked and played the game, many fans turned their dissatisfaction into anger towards Neil Druckmann. The latter led the development of The Last of Us Part II and worked as a creative director and lead co-writer. For many, Druckmann did a poor writing job making the story not that enjoyable.

This Redditor thinks this isn’t true as Druckmann contributed to the writing in the first game and wrote the museum scene in the second one, which means he knows how to write for Ellie’s and Joel’s characters. Nevertheless, the Reddit user thinks the story didn’t fulfill players’ expectations because Druckmann had the wrong priorities. He wanted to subvert people’s expectations to make people talk more about the game.

3 Players Should Play Abby’s Part First

Part of what makes this sequel’s storytelling so unique is that it lets you play for half of the game as one character only to force you to play as another one in the second half. However, one Redditor points out that it would’ve made more sense to play as Abby first, instead of Ellie.

Their point is that if you get to know Abby and her story first, eventually, the character will grow on you, until Joel’s death twist comes along. By then, players would be forced to switch into Ellie’s perspective only to be very conflicted by her actions as you would want revenge but also understand Abby’s side of the story.

2 The Last Of Us II Story Is The Better One

When the first game was released in 2013, many gamers were moved and touched by this PlayStation exclusive. TLOS tells a story about hope, family, and sacrifices throughout the mains characters, Joel and Ellie. By the end, these two are like father and daughter, so many players understood and even agreed with Joel’s final decision to save Ellie’s life, even if that meant robbing humanity of a cure.

For this Redditor, the first game wasn’t that emotional, making them enjoy The Last Of Us II way more.

1 Abby Was A Complete Badass

True, Abby might be one of the most hated videogame characters of 2020 because she ended up brutally killing Joel in The Last Of Us II, even if she had a good reason for doing so; after all, Joel did kill her father.

However, as this Reddit user points out, she’s a total badass and a super-strong character that reminds everyone that women can be warriors too.
