Ellie and Abby were the two playable characters in The Last of Us Part 2, and players got to spend a good amount of time with both of them learning about their motivations and character traits. Although both of these characters have done some very nice things for their friends, there were still many decisions that they made during the events of The Last of Us Part 2 that made fans angry.
Both of these characters made some statements to their friends that were also morally wrong. Ellie and Abby both have downsides to their characters, and some of the actions that they each took for revenge were either morally wrong or unnecessary.
10 Abby - When She And Owen Cheated On Mel
Mel was pregnant when Owen cheated on her with Abby, and that makes the decision between these two characters even more terrible from a moral standpoint.
During The Last of Us Part 2, players will get to see a scene where Owen cheats on Mel with Abby even though their relationship has been broken up for years. Players consider this to be one of the worst things that Abby does in the game, and it’s no surprise since Mel is supposed to be her friend.
9 Ellie - When She Tortured Nora
When Ellie finds Nora in the hospital and traps her in a room with spores, Ellie realizes that Nora is going to die anyway, and as such, she will not be giving Ellie any information about Abby’s location through conversation.
The only way that Ellie was able to get information out of Nora is by torturing her, and this was one of the worst things that Ellie has done in the franchise so far. Torturing people seems out of Ellie’s character as well, which makes it even worse that Ellie was willing to commit such a terrible act.
8 Abby - When She Killed Jesse
Abby killed many notable characters in The Last of Us Part 2, and perhaps one of the most shocking was when she killed Jesse after encountering Ellie’s group in the theater. This scene was both one of the saddest and most harsh plot points in the entire game.
It shouldn’t come as a surprise to most fans that Abby killed Jesse considering that the group killed all of her friends, however since Jesse was a very likable character, a lot of fans felt angry that Abby took this action.
7 Ellie - When She Killed Dogs
Ellie killed a lot of dogs in The Last of Us Part 2, and fans have debated whether it is completely unnecessary since dogs can be subdued through other measures, including giving them food and distracting them with throwable objects.
Some of the scenes in The Last of Us Part 2, where Ellie kills dogs, are hard to watch, especially for animal lovers since they are so graphic and brutal. Every time that Ellie killed a dog in the game, a lot of fans were upset that she didn’t distract them in another way.
6 Abby - When She Fought Against Ellie
Players got to witness two emotional scenes between Abby and Ellie, where they brutally fought each other in hand-to-hand combat.
During the first of these two scenes, the player controls Abby instead of Ellie, and this made many fans upset because they had to fight one of their favorite video game characters of all time. It is difficult to root for Abby while she is trying to kill such a beloved character.
5 Ellie - When She Yelled At Joel
During a flashback, fans get to experience Ellie and Dina’s first kiss at an event in Jackson. Seth calls Ellie a slur, which prompts Joel to stand up for Ellie and Dina.
Ellie was still angry about what had happened with the Fireflies, and she snaps at Joel, telling him that she can handle herself without his help. It is evident that Ellie regrets being acting so harsh towards Joel because of the way that she acts afterward, and a lot of players were upset with how Ellie reacted in this situation.
4 Abby - When She Bit Ellie’s Fingers Off
In the final few scenes of the game, Ellie and Abby will have their final fight, and as Ellie drowns Abby underwater, Abby’s only weapon to fight back was her teeth.
As such, Abby bites off two of Ellie’s fingers, and this was one of the most emotional scenes in the entire game. After the fight, many fans were upset that Abby had done this because now Ellie is unable to play the guitar.
3 Ellie - When She Left Dina And The Farm
When Ellie decides to track down Abby for the second time, she leaves Dina and her baby. Hunting down Abby was a questionable decision since the first time had failed so horribly and gotten Jesse killed.
In this scene, fans can see Dina begging for Ellie not to leave, but Ellie completely disregards this and sets off to find Abby anyway. This scene made many players hate Ellie, and although it is somewhat understandable since it seems that she had PTSD because of what happened to Joel, it is still one of the most upsetting scenes in the entire game.
2 Abby - When She Killed Joel
One of the most controversial plot points in The Last of Us Part 2 is when Abby kills Joel as revenge for Joel, killing her dad in the first game.
A lot of players hated that Joel died in Part2, and that is no surprise since he was the protagonist of the first game. When Abby initially killed Joel, many fans were angry and wanted her character to get killed off right away, and there are some players that, even after finishing the game, still hate Abby as a character because she killed Joel.
1 Ellie - When She Killed Mel And Owen
Ellie killed a lot of people that were friends of Abby as revenge for Abby killing Joel. However, it is debatable that Mel and Owen never even had to die because of the poor decisions that Ellie made and her poorly planned out plan to invade the aquarium.
Ellie killed Mel despite the fact that she was pregnant, and Ellie is even seen in the next scene feeling bad about what she had done. Although many players didn’t particularly care for Owen or Mel as characters, it is easy to empathize with the fact that they didn’t need to die.
