Anticipation for The Last of Us 2 is building and many are expecting a sequel that explores the compelling narrative and relationships from the original further. While leaks about The Last of Us 2 have damaged its marketing campaign, a lot of players are still interested in the title and the story it will provide. The story trailer for the game has now been remade using LEGO and the results are as impressive as they are hilarious.

There have been video game trailers that have been recreated with LEGO before, but this particular effort manages to manipulate the tone of the original trailer very well. The original The Last of Us 2 story trailer was atmospheric and reintroduced Ellie while showcasing her current life, before throwing it into peril with several quick edits which show the cannibalistic creatures in the game as well as the dangerous humans who inhabit the world. Safe to say the LEGO-based trailer was inventive with the horror elements.

The trailer, by YouTuber Pavesome Films, opens with similar lighting to the original as Ellie and her partner speak romantically, with the only noticeable difference being an over-sized cigarette in the hand of a LEGO figure. From that point on the trailer does an incredible job of matching the trailer shot for shot and capturing the color palette that is used throughout. Surprisingly the tension of the original The Last of Us 2 trailer transfers well in this LEGO version but as the horror images increase there are some humorous moments. Most notably there is a hot-dog man who is cleverly disguised as a Bloater in an incredible piece of creativity. Some users also claimed that the way the LEGO characters were moved to show shaking hands was a highlight.

Despite its deliberately funny moments, this fan-made trailer does a fantastic job of capturing the movement, style, and cinematography of the original. After watching this video many will be reminded of the upcoming release of the game and may begin to wonder about what will feature in The Last of Us 2. While leaks may have acted as a hindrance to the marketing campaign this LEGO trailer serves as a reminder of how effective the original trailer was.

It will be interesting to see if The Last of Us 2 can live up to the expectation surrounding it and defy some of the pessimism that has come after leaks. What is clear is that the game has a dedicated fan who has put a lot of time and effort into recreating the original trailer. If the developer, Naughty Dog, has matched this dedication fans should be in for a treat.

The Last of Us Part 2 launches June 19 on PS4.
