It’s been a couple of years since the official announcement of The Last of Us: Part 2, the sequel to Naughty Dog’s critically acclaimed PlayStation exclusive, and the developers have very much kept the details of the game close to their chests. Very little official information has been revealed, with quite a few of what we do know coming from rumors and leaks (including The Last of Us 2 release date) and the newest piece is no exception - the first game’s weapon upgrade system will be coming back.
This news, bizarrely enough, comes from a promo video Naughty Dog made to celebrate International Women’s Day. While the focus is obviously on Naughty Dog’s female staff members, we can catch glimpses of work being done on The Last of Us: Part 2. On a first glance, there doesn’t seem to be anything noteworthy but eagle-eyed members of the Last of Us Reddit community were able to discover some interesting details - among them being the aforementioned upgrade system, which we can see being worked on by UI designer Maria Capel.
The UI can be spotted at 0:37 in the video and, while quite blurry, we can make out the word “upgrade” on the screen and images of pistols. Those who played the first game will no doubt notice that the UI is significantly cleaner this time, though at this point it’s unknown how much customization will be possible and whether it’ll be handled exactly like the first game or be altered in some way. It’s also entirely possible that this might not even be from the main game and is actually for the Last of Us 2’s multiplayer mode, which is believed to have customizable characters according to a job listing posted by Naughty Dog.
Excited fans will probably still have to wait quite a while before the game even comes out, but at least it seems as though development is coming along smoothly.
The Last of Us: Part 2 will release as a PS4 exclusive.
