Aside from the primitive cult Seraphites, another survivor group that debuted on The Last of Us: Part II is the Washington Liberation Front, or colloquially known as the Wolves. Unlike the Seraphites, the Wolves are heavily reliant on machinery and technology, something the Scars believe as a wrongful sin. Over the years, the two most prominent groups in Seattle have been at war against each other to race for the city’s reign.
As Ellie and Abby’s odyssey of vengeance has come to an end, there’s so much people still don’t know about the Wolves. There are many major spoilers, so feel free to back off if you haven’t played Part II yet!
10 How The Washington Liberation Front Was Formed
During an interview, Naughty Dog’s Neil Druckmann confirmed that the Washington Liberation Front has started somewhen between 15 years before the event of Part II. The militia group was formed in the wake of the fall of Seattle’s military Quarantine Zone and developed a modern community.
They settle at CenturyLink Field Stadium, which serves as the home-base of Seattle Seahawks and Seattle Sounders FC in real life. The gym, library, dining hall, and even schools are available for the community. Their motto is, “May your survival be long. May your death be swift.”
9 Isaac Dixon Was Not the First Leader of the Wolves
Just like the Seraphites with their unnamed prophet, Isaac was not the first leader of the Wolves even though he was among the first member of the rebel group. It was the two Patterson siblings, Emma and Jason, who became the group’s first-ever leaders.
However, a big-scaled war broke out between them and FEDRA. The Wolves, back in the days, were so helpless against FEDRA’s unlimited and government-funded weaponry, making them a weak target. Emma, Jason, and numerous top-flight Wolves died during the war, leaving Isaac to be overseen as the group’s successor after them.
8 Ellie Was the One Lieutenant Torres Wanted to Come After the Wolves
On another side of the story, Lieutenant Carmelo Torres was FEDRA’s leading commander at Seattle’s Quarantine Zone, the now-base of the Washington Liberation Front. The growing reputability of the Wolves under Isaac’s commando had worried FEDRA and Lieutenant Torres so much that he frequently visited Rabbi Zivah Saunders for strength and guidance & even asked for reinforcement to the FEDRA Headquarters.
As the war between them rose to a higher stake, Lieutenant Torres and the remaining of his men were trapped & killed by the Wolves in his office. The letters that prove this can be found during Ellie and Dina’s journey of searching for gasoline at the courthouse, and he even hoped that Ellie would be the one who’d come after them & make them pay.
7 The Dark Truth of the Wolves
Leading a thriving community is not a piece of cake, and unfortunately, the cost that Isaac had to pay for it was pretty high. His brutal and reckless nature helped Isaac to take survival to a new extreme. He’d frequently capture outsiders, from the Seraphites, Hunters, or even anyone else, and put them into their apartment prisons to torture them just to gain a little bit of information.
6 Isaac’s Brutal Nature Led Some of the Wolves Into Joining the Seraphites
This animalistic behavior is not acceptable to some Wolves. Eventually, they would either end up fleeing the stadium, completely disappearing from the city of Seattle, or even joining the other side of the warzone.
Even Abby and Owen, probably two of the most hated characters of the game when played for the first time, had expressed their despise of Isaac’s torturous method and war-maniac policies.
5 For What Reason the Wolves Went to War Against the Seraphites
Just like the Seraphites, the Wolves actually started as a ‘peaceful’ community with almost no harm intentions to fellow survivors. The death of Emma, Jason, and the remaining on-board Wolves was the turning point of this community, and they had to replace them with a relentless leader like Isaac.
So, for what reason exactly did they go to war against the Seraphites in the first place? Simple, it’s the territory control. Even though the Seraphites actually live on an island just a couple of miles far from Seattle’s shore, Isaac was so greedy of their area and resource that the war between them became inevitable.
4 Unlike the Seraphites, the Wolves Didn’t Exactly Accept Newcomers
To protect their community, the Wolves were not really a welcoming group toward others, something that the harsh nature of apocalyptic years had grown on them. They always show no sign of mercy from seeing outsiders as a menace and torturing them, even if it’s for a small piece of information. They might have welcomed some of the ex-Fireflies, like Abby, Manny, Owen, Mel, and Nora, but they only did because of their combat experience.
3 The Last of Us Wasn’t the First Time Dina & Isaac Crossed Each Other
Yes, Dina and Isaac are among the main characters that actually had never crossed each other at the game, they actually did on another venture. Both Jeffrey Wright, Isaac’s likeness actor, and Shannon Woodward, Dina’s motion-capture actress, were featured on HBO’s Westworld.
Jeffrey played a more significant role than Shannon as Bernard Lowe, while Shannon portrayed Elsie Hughes for the first two seasons. Interestingly, Halley Gross, Part II’s writer, was also one of the show’s prolific writers. It’s always good to see video games and TV shows reunite people.
2 Even After Carefully Planning the Surprise Ambush, the Wolves Still Lost Against the Seraphites
Over the months, the Wolves under Isaac’s iron hands had been preparing to one final ambush at the Seraphites’ territory, miles away from Seattle’s shore. Despite that fact and the countless casualties from both sides, the Wolves didn’t manage to come out as the winner. Players will learn later through a radio broadcast that Isaac was fatally killed by Yara’s 9mm Pistol when she sacrificed herself so Abby & Lev could buy some time.
1 The Inevitable Fate of the Wolves
So, what’s next for the Wolves? Now that their bloodthirsty, vicious, and hard-hearted leader Isaac is out of the picture, the peaceful future is not far from reality once they hope. Nobody exactly knows or theorize who could be the next leader of the movement, given the fact that most of the Wolves characters we know are Abby’s friends that die in the hands of Ellie or the Seraphites, but here goes the hope.
Until Neil Druckmann decides a DLC for Part II or an on-going development for Part III, we could dig out nothing for now.
