Those five words ring loud and true even with their chilling coldness. Despite the many leaks amassing in droves across the internet, The Last of Us: Part II and its newest story trailer successfully enraptured its truest fans. Though riddled with scenes and imagery already teased, the trailer offers some examples of new mechanics and characters from the forthcoming sequel.
“I have to finish it.”
Old and New Faces
Shown at the climax of the State of Play trailer, effectively pile-driving the force and emotion Part II will only expound upon, Troy Baker’s gruff voice echoes before gracing the screen with the now-aged expression of his character. While the return of Joel is to be expected, who else from The Last of Us could possibly show face? Making his grand reappearance from the beginning of the original, Joel’s younger brother, Tommy, seems to be playing a key role as Ellie’s conscious protector.
New characters, like Jesse shown in the above image, will offer interesting developments in the plot. Given his history with Dina, who is not only Ellie’s partner in the sequel but whose death teased in the State of Play trailer seems to be a centerpiece for the overall narrative, Jesse may end up becoming a helpful companion on certain quests. Other introductory characters include Yara and Lev, a sister and younger brother respectively, who were once Seraphites that escaped the cult for unknown reasons. Some individual Seraphites, such as the woman Yara kills for torturing her, named Emily, will likely hold important roles as main antagonists.
Weapons Customization
The Last of Us: Part II story trailer may have only touched on it for a mere second, but weapons customization, shown more in-depth on Twitter, will be far more detailed than the original. With a range of specific upgrades at the player’s disposal, including Rate of Fire, Stability, Capacity, and even Rifle Scopes, each requiring their own array of parts found in the world, customizing Ellie’s arms will feel much more satisfying than Joel’s.
Better weaponry upgrades equals more streamlined shooting mechanics, blending both into the crutch of the story. The survival aspect and stealth inherent of the title may not seem like it offers any meaningful third-person shooting, yet that explosive Part II story trailer begs to differ. There will be A LOT of shooting in this game, vastly different from its predecessor, cemented by the thrilling and action-packed angle the narrative now leads. Even with the expanded bells and whistles on guns, the bow is clearly Ellie’s modus operandi for killing.
New Mechanics
One of the most revealing parts in the new trailer is when Ellie fires rapidly at incoming vehicles from the back of a pickup truck. While it’s most likely only a brief instance from a specific mission, the scene suggests new mechanics, like firing out of vehicles or from horseback. The State of Play trailer previewed several sequences with Ellie and others riding horses, so it’s clear these will be the main method of travel when on the go, but will The Last of Us: Part II also introduce driving to the series?
Stealth is obviously making a comeback with improved mechanics and methods of concealment. Ellie is displayed hiding among brushes, beneath vehicles, in overgrown grass, and under darkness. The new Part II story trailer exemplifies how the environment and lighting can be just as helpful as that bow and arrow.
Thankfully, Sony is approaching the leaks with extreme seriousness and, given they may never be dispelled, it’s probably best to steer clear from social media until the sequel’s release. The Last of Us: Part II spoilers may have dampened moods and potentially even ruined the release of 2020’s most anticipated release, it will still be an unreplicable experience. Join Ellie on a raging quest for revenge and survival on June 19.
