The Legend of Zelda series is no stranger to creepy confines. Whether it’s cemeteries, tombs, or other haunted abodes, Hyrule and its surrounding areas seek to terrify you. If you’re looking for the ideal Halloween adventure, the Zelda series offers more than a handful of places to seek out.
For players looking to trick-or-treat with monsters, some locales follow many of the traditional spooks accustomed to Halloween. However, for players seeking a darker, more terrifying thrill, the series delivers in spades. Enter if you dare.
10 Yoll Graveyard
This cemetery is home to the first dungeon in The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages. The colors quickly turn to a darker, blue hue once Link steps into its confines. The player will be surrounded by gravestones, sinister trees, crows, and of course, ghosts.
Enter the first dungeon and pursue the first elemental. Inside Spirit’s Grave, you will come across undead enemies such as Stalfos and encounter the dreaded Wallmaster. In the end, you’ll encounter the dungeon’s boss: Pumpkin Head.
9 Sacred Grove
This version of the Lost Woods appears in The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess. While the Kokiri Forest of Ocarina of Time was once populated with the Kokiri children, in Twilight Princess, that does not seem to be the case. Rather, Skull Kids seek your candy when trick-or-treating.
The Sacred Grove features a beautiful piano arrangement of the Lost Woods theme. Yet it brings about a more haunting atmosphere than before. Empty, yet ominous, it makes for an ideal retreat from the Twilight realm surrounding Hyrule.
8 Skeleton Forest
If you prefer a darker atmosphere in your forest, then you might want to try your luck in the Dark World or Lorule. Appearing in A Link to the Past and A Link Between Worlds, Skeleton Forest appeared within the corrupt Hyrule’s version of the Lost Woods. The forest features a slew of creepy monsters, skull boulders, skeletal remains, and covered by a mist.
The dungeon, Skull Woods, counts Gibdos and Stalfos among its undead. A Link Between Worlds’ version features a chilling piano tune as well. If you’re planning your Halloween adventure in Skull Woods, beware of the Wallmaster.
7 Hyrule During a Blood Moon
In the Hyrule of Breath of the Wild, anywhere makes for the perfect locale for a Halloween adventure. Set 100 years after the awakening of Calamity Ganon, Hyrule has largely been reduced to a battleground beset with Ganon’s minions across the countryside. Moreover, many of these creatures feature the skeletal Stal versions.
Unlike any other Zelda title, Breath of the Wild features the Blood Moon. This ominous, chilling event features a red moon and an unsettling theme that plays to its climax. In doing so, all enemies once killed respawn. Awakening the dead is also part of Halloween’s charm.
6 Village of Outcasts and Thieves’ Town
In A Link to the Past’s and A Link Between Worlds’ desolate landscape, this is one of the few places which offer any sort of civilization. The latter features a group of thieves who band together as well. Plus it even features a Milk Bar.
The downside of Kakariko’s counterpart comes from the many thieves seeking to push you for all your loot. One hard ram from a Pikku and all the candy you sought to obtain will be gone in an instant. Trick-or-treat with care.
5 Ikana Canyon
The final major area in Majora’s Mask is home to the undead. Ikana Canyon features a well of tragedy to include the loss of its king and its citizens. This now barren wasteland is beset with the spirits of the Garo, Gibdos, Poes, and Redeads.
Ikana Canyon is also home to a little girl named Pamela and her father, a scientist. If you choose your Halloween adventure in this canyon, you’ll be greeted with hostile entities who may dance for you while wearing the right mask. If you choose to meet Pamela, you’ll meet her Gibdo father and, when you play the Song of Healing, you’ll witness perhaps the saddest scene in the entire Zelda series. Stick with the former if you wish to avoid a feels trip.
4 Shadow Temple
Along with the Bottom of the Well, the Shadow Temple appeared in Ocarina of Time. Known throughout the fanbase as one of the creepiest locales in all of gaming, the Shadow Temple invites only hostile presences. If it’s not bad enough it’s roaming with the undead, arachnophobes will also have to endure the presence of Skulltulas.
Despite this, for those seeking a thrill, it’s the perfect locale for a Halloween outing. Bring your friends to celebrate the bloody history of Hyrule. Examine the bloodstains on the floor coming from the many execution chambers inside. It’s like a haunted house thrill that comes at the cost of your soul.
3 Twilight Hyrule
When Hyrule is beset with the Twilight forces, most of its major regions are transformed. In Twilight Princess, the Twilight realm offers an ominous glow surrounding the skies and the landscapes. Plus it’s home to various, hostile shadow enemies.
Fortunately, the best part comes from the beautiful Silent Hill-like keyboard playing the background theme. This makes for an ideal locale for those seeking a haunting adventure. It’s empty, ominous, dangerous, and while you can’t get any candy, you can earn plenty of Tears of Light.
2 Ghost Pirate Ship
In The Wind Waker, this locale is one of the key locations to visit on the quest to re-enter Hyrule. Specifically in The Wind Waker HD, specifically, it’s home to a Triforce Shard. Unfortunately, it comes with defeating the Poes, Redeads, and Stalfos which lurk within.
The Ghost Pirate Ship does feature will o’ the wisps flying around the ominous vessel surrounded by mist. Plus it pays to note the Fishman’s ominous messages alluding to the ship when feeding him bait. Despite this, players seeking their next Halloween adventure get to do so with undead pirates.
1 Royal Valley
In The Minish Cap, the player must enter the Royal Valley to gain access to one of the last locations in the game. In doing so, they’ll enter a mysterious wood and must, as per series tradition, navigate through its maze. Upon doing so, they’ll find themselves at a cemetery.
The Royal Valley houses ghosts, bats, and a myriad of undead creatures. Players must also unearth the Royal Crypt, filled with Gibdos, in order to proceed. Yet when considering its color thematic, surroundings, and enemies, it’s among the perfect locations to enjoy a Halloween adventure. Not too scary, not too shallow, and instead of trick-or-treating, you can fuse Kinstones with ghosts and Dampe!
