Final Fantasy X is a story about saving the world that has the spirit of road-tripping with your friends. The party members win trophies, overcome fears together, fall in love, and, regrettably, share a few laughs.
Part of what makes a summoner’s pilgrimage such an enjoyable slow march to one’s death is the company. The variety of unique personalities in the FFX party results in a myriad of interesting and heartwarming character interactions as they grow closer. Their personalities span the scope of the MBTI instrument in some surprisingly unique ways.
16 Kimahri Ronso - INTJ
When an INTJ sets a goal, they pursue it with ruthless determination. No one can stand in the way of their ambitions, although INTJs can sometimes let their pride and combativeness get in the way of their relationships.
At the beginning of the pilgrimage, Kimahri’s only emotional deviance from his stoicism is when he’s attacking in a rage. It’s hard to get to know Kimahri - it’s not that the Ronso hates Tidus, he just has no time for anything that distracts from his goal of getting Yuna to Zanarkand safely.
15 Yu Yevon - INFJ
INFJs have an incredible imagination, which can sometimes lead to them being detached from reality. High-minded and inventive, they love to live in their own heads.
Yu Yevon literally uses his mind to create his own world when he summons up the entire civilization of Zanarkand. Other INFJs would likely love to have the ability to summon their own reality for 1000 years.
14 Lord Braska - ISTJ
ISTJs excel at following the rules. They prefer to keep order at all costs, and will usually play by the rules.
It is unsurprising that Braska’s dogmatic nature leads him to sacrifice himself and his companions even though he learns the truth of the endlessness of Spira’s suffering. What is the Calm if not order, perfected?
13 Belgemine - ISTP
ISTPs work well, and they work alone. While often withdrawing from the social realm, ISTPs can accomplish great things in their working lives.
Belgemine is a formidable summoner, with all of Spira’s temple summons at her command in her hideout at Remiem Temple. It begs the question of why she didn’t finish her pilgrimage - perhaps she chose to have no guardians, to preserve her solitude.
12 Maechen - INTP
INTPs are brilliant intellectuals, but they are often also endearingly socially awkward. They often shy away from socializing, and, in conversation, have a tendency to ramble and get lost in their own thoughts.
The ancient Maechen’s narration of history is the very definition of rambling. But, if the player has the patience to listen, his stories are both informative and full of the excitement he has for Spira’s history.
11 Yuna - INFP
INFPs are quiet, gentle souls who really just wish we could all get along. But don’t test their values; INFPs are surprisingly strong-willed when it comes to what they believe is right.
The Lady Yuna is placating to the degree that she’s willing to abandon her pilgrimage and marry Seymour if it has the best chance of bringing happiness to Spira. But when she discovers the truth behind Sin, she becomes immovable in her demand for a real solution.
10 Auron - ISFJ
ISFJs are the kind of people you want to have your back - and luckily, chances are they do. They are loyal and true and will defend their loved ones to the death.
Auron, as guardian to Lord Braska, is there for his friends to the bitter end. Auron is such an ISFJ that he’s there to a second bitter end when Tidus shows up a decade later to repeat his father’s path.
9 Jecht - ISFP
Independent, original, and creative, ISFPs are constantly looking to stretch themselves and broaden their horizons. They eagerly rise to new challenges but can be competitive if they feel like someone is stealing their thunder.
As the genius creator of the Jecht Shot and former star of the Zanarkand Abes, Jecht takes his adventures one step farther when he is brought to Spira accidentally. His aggressive nature leads him to bully Tidus but also results in him becoming a successful guardian to Braska.
8 Captain Lucil - ENTJ
ENTJs are naturally commanding, fit to lead a group and manage their activities. They may not do as well managing their subordinates’ emotions, but it’s not necessarily due to unkindness.
Lucil is Captain of the Chocobo Knights for a reason - she’s respectful of her troops but her authoritative presence will not be denied. She tends to leave Clasko in her dust, but at least her lack of coddling eventually leads him to find his true calling.
7 Wakka - ENFJ
ENFJs sometimes mistake themselves for introverts; they adore being around people, but their tendency to try to manage everyone’s emotional well-being can leave them feeling exhausted from the company. This doesn’t stop them from appointing themselves group leaders more often than not.
As team captain for the Aurochs, Wakka’s no stranger to a leadership position. With his team, with Tidus, and with his brother Chappu, he feels a responsibility for everyone’s happiness that can sometimes result in him acting like his own worst enemy.
6 Lulu - ESTJ
ESTJs set sky-high expectations and will suffer no fools. Although they are intimidating as all hell, ESTJs are natural leaders and are excellent at manipulating their charges towards achieving their purposes.
Tidus’s first words on encountering Lulu are: “Wow. Scary.” She doesn’t mince words or hide her sighs of disgust at his ignorance of Spira’s customs, but she also volunteers most of the advice that helps Tidus become a little less useless.
5 Tidus - ESTP
ESTPs are friendly, warm, excitable puppies who love to make other people smile. They are often successful at this with their shenanigans, although they’re just as likely to get into trouble with their risky behavior.
Tidus quickly endears himself even to the people whom he deeply irritates (which is approximately half the party). His bold moves sometimes lead to him looking like a jackass in front of all of Luca, but, then again, sometimes lead to him saving all of Spira.
4 Cid - ENTP
ENTPs are sometimes contrarians, who can often use the power of their intellect to put others to shame. But their ability to consider all angles also makes them brilliant strategists.
Cid is inarguably a helpful ally in the fight against Sin, with the targeted dips and swoops in his airship. But he also initially ruins literally everyone’s plans - the party, Yevon, the rest of Spira - with his ill-advised plan to kidnap the summoners.
3 O’aka XXIII - ENFP
ENFPs can’t be tied down - they prefer to operate on their own terms, which can sometimes set them at odds with those reliant on them. But they are warm and friendly people, full of energy to pursue their whims.
O’aka the XXIII treats his customers as his friends in his conversation, if not in his prices. But his outside-the-box thinking lands him in hot water with his Al Bhed creditors and with his choice in real estate.
2 Seymour - ESFJ
Charismatic and friendly, ESFJs are often well-liked and popular. They always follow through on their commitments, but this dedication can often be born of their obsession with their social standing.
Seymour is squarely in the spotlight, and almost universally popular at the beginning of the FFX. But his ability to rise in the ranks of Spiran society is a result of his ability to play the Yevon game against his own people, and submit to the perpetuity of Sin.
1 Rikku - ESFP
ESFPs are the life of the party. Their upbeat and people-focused personality makes them fun in a crowd, but when it comes to work, ESFPs sometimes have an inability to focus.
Spunky Rikku endears herself to everyone, even pushing through Wakka’s anti-Al Bhed prejudice to win him over. She’s less successful at coming up with a plan to save Yuna that involves any strategy beyond sheer hope and grit, but at least her heart is in the right place.
