Final Fantasy XII is known for the high quality of its storytelling. The intricacies of the plot and politics of Ivalice are brought to life with a cast of characters that are as varied in their personalities as they are in their weaponry.
Although FFXII has an extremely cohesive aesthetic, each of the MBTI personality types makes an appearance in the details of the characters’ choices.
16 Al-Cid Margrace - ESFP
ESFPs are known to have a flair for the dramatic. They are larger-than-life personalities who love to entertain but shy away from conflict.
Al-Cid makes quite the entrance in his first appearance in the game, complete with a dramatic sunglasses removal. It doesn’t get much more extra than having an assistant to carry your eyewear, but Al-Cid’s goal is one shared by many a noble drama queen: world peace.
15 Marquis Halim Ondore IV - ESFJ
ESFJs are warm, friendly personalities, who use their social skills to try and unite everyone. They can be keen adherents to what is socially acceptable, and their standing in the social hierarchy is important to them.
Marquis Ondore uses his social graces and patience to keep Bhujerba on the good side of its more mighty neighbors. Although he comes to the party’s aid, he does it quietly; his primary goal is to keep Bhujerba neutral in the war.
14 Balthier - ENFP
Highly social and friendly personalities, ENFPs often have friends all over the world. They are natural adventurers who are always looking for new experiences, and they refuse to be micro-managed.
Balthier makes the entire world of Ivalice his home as a sky pirate. He leaves the rank of Judge behind when it conflicts with his values, but despite his insistence that he prefers to operate on his own terms, his caring nature won’t let him abandon his friends.
13 Venat - ENTP
ENTPs have a whole ecosystem of contradictory ideas living in their head, just waiting to be used in their next intellectual battle. Naturally given to questioning the status quo, ENTPs can often come across as contrarians when they poke at the holes in others’ logic.
Venat is one of those Final Fantasy baddies who makes a lot of sense if only their argument didn’t include also murdering the whole party. They easily persuade multiple leaders of Ivalice to their cause of opposing the ruling Occuria.
12 Vayne Solidor - ENTJ
ENTJs are proud, charismatic, and strong-willed, but they can sometimes too easily dismiss others’ needs. They are excellent leaders who naturally persuade others to join their cause.
Despite Vayne’s ruthlessness, he is an extremely likable and confident character. He easily transcends his father’s authority and has no problem keeping most of his new subjects in Rabanastre under his thumb.
11 Larsa Solidor - ENFJ
ENTJs love people and task themselves with the well-being of everyone around them. But they can sometimes be too idealistic in their goals to satisfy everyone.
Larsa’s goal is peace and prosperity for all the denizens of the Empire. His idealism is heart-warming but can sometimes lead him to underestimate the ambition and cruelty of his brother.
10 Reddas - ESTJ
ESTJs are commanding natural leaders with a gift for organizing others. They set extremely high standards that can result in them achieving great things, but can also make them come across as ruthless.
Reddas left his position as an Archadian judge to live in the pirate colony of Balfonheim, where he quickly organizes and legitimizes the pirates and becomes their leader. He is quick to attack the party, but also quick to acknowledge them as allies afterward, in true shrewd ESTJ fashion.
9 Vaan - ESTP
Excitable and friendly, ESTPs are extremely personable types who love to surround themselves with friends. They are always up for an adventure, although their impulsive natures can sometimes lead to risky behavior.
Vaan easily mingles with everyone he meets from the common folk of Rabanastre to the members of Ivalice’s elite ruling class. He is brave and always ready for new experiences, but his eagerness means his friends sometimes have to bail him out.
8 Fran - ISFP
ISFPs love to take in as much aesthetic information about the world as possible. They are curious and highly independent explorers who are very sensitive to the emotions of those around them.
Fran’s yearning to explore new lands leads her to leave her hometown despite the extremely harsh consequences of that decision. She is thoughtful and observant about her party members, but her sensitivity really shows during the party’s experiences with Mist.
7 Basch - ISFJ
ISFJs are generally good-hearted people who have their friends’ backs no matter what. They take their duties seriously, but their dislike of the spotlight can sometimes allow others to take advantage of their diligence.
Basch takes his duty of protecting Ashe and avenging Dalmasca extremely seriously, even though the party is distrustful of him. While Basch can’t be blamed for his brother framing him at Nabudis, it is definitely a classic ISFJ move to operate as one of the good guys without acknowledgment.
6 Penelo - INFP
Sweet and placating, INFPs have a reputation for being shy people-pleasers. They would prefer that everyone gets along but can be surprisingly strong-willed when pushed to do something they don’t agree with.
Penelo has a sweet, unassuming nature, and she goes along with what the party decides without complaint, despite being caught up in affairs that she was never previously a part of. But when Vaan makes his rash decisions or proposes a risky plan, she has no problem sticking to her guns and telling him he’s wrong.
5 Vossler - INTP
INTPs have analytical and objective minds. They like to quietly work out all the answers by themselves, but this disconnection from the rest of humanity can sometimes lead them to answers that are only correct on paper.
Vossler isn’t a shut-in, but his anxiety and distrust from the fall of the Dalmasca mean that he is unlikely to share his thoughts with others. He makes a decision for the future of Dalmasca that is objectively most likely to get him the results he wants but pits him against his allies in the process.
4 Dr. Cid - INTJ
INTJs tend to have a gigantic intellect that can bring them glory as often as it gets them in trouble. They can rise to the top of their fields with their brilliant discoveries and strategies, but they have a tendency to ignore other people’s desires and opinions that can get them in trouble.
As the top researcher of manufacted nethicite, there is no doubt that Dr. Cid is one of the greatest scientific minds in all of Ivalice. But his ignorance of the human aspect of the equation means he lets his genius take him down a destructive road.
3 Ashe - INFJ
INFJs are idealistic and dreamy. They work hard to build a better world, but sometimes parts of that world might exist only in their own mind.
Ashe is similarly dedicated to her cause of saving the kingdom of Dalmasca from Archadian domination. Although Ashe’s determination is noble, she sometimes refuses to acknowledge the enormity of what she faces and doesn’t readily accept the help that she needs.
2 Gabranth - ISTJ
ISTJs elevate the maintenance of order to an art form. They are experts at following rules, but sometimes their adherence to their dogma can cause them to lose sight of what is truly important.
The heavily-armored Judge Gabranth takes his role as the Archadian Empire’s premier enforcer extremely seriously. His devotion to Archadia’s rule of law is so strong that he makes an enemy of his own family, Basch.
1 Gran Kiltias Anastasis - ISTP
ISTPs can accomplish some amazing things, especially if everyone else leaves them alone. Although they can develop their skills independently to an incredible level, their disconnect from the rest of society can sometimes leave them at a disadvantage.
Gran Kiltias Anastasis is the top authority in all of Ivalice as its spiritual leader at Mt. Bur-Omisace, theoretically trumping even the leaders of the Archadian Empire and other kingdoms. This theory eventually fails the Gran Kiltias, as his self-removal from the violence of the war results in him succumbing to it.
