There are a staggering amount of characters in Hades, and each one of them feels so unique in their own way. Frankly, it’s one of the many ways Supergiant innovated on the Rouglite genre.
It’s a big cast, made up of all the Gods and Goddesses from Greek Mythology that would start a war over a single insult, so it’s safe to say they have larger-than-life personalities. And, as far as we can tell after maxing out every single bond, these are the Myers–Briggs Type Indicators for all of them.
29 Zagreus: ENTP
First and foremost is the main character of this award-winning game, Zagreus. ENTP types are reliable, charismatic, altruistic, and are able to accept people for who they are. They forgive easily, though they can be a bit sensitive. Sound a bit like a certain prince of the Underworld? In any case, there’s a lot to learn about Zag over the course of Hades, and his charming personality makes people want to know this info.
28 Hades: ISTJ
Next up is the exact person Zagreus has a problem with, Hades, otherwise known as his father & the God of the Underworld. Hades is without a doubt an ISTJ-type, at least the version of him portrayed in this game is. They’re people who are deathly serious about their duties, follow logic over emotions, and are direct with people to a fault. They’re known to be stubborn traditionalists who can be pretty insensitive, such as a Father who won’t let his son leave and grow on his own or even tell him about his birth mom.
27 Nyx: INTJ
Then there’s Nyx, know as Night Incarnate and/or the entity who ruled the Underworld before Hades or even the Titans. This personality type is one of the rarest, which makes sense for Nyx considering there’s no one else like her. INTJ’s are independent by nature and are comfortable making decisions completely on their own without a shred of fear. And, they’re also not known for being all cuddly and warm with people, which is a problem a lot of fans first thought Nyx had.
26 Cerberus: ESFJ
ESFJ’s are balls of positive energy, which also accurately describes any dog, let alone one with three times the amount of brainpower/energy. Cerberus is the Guard Dog of the Underworld, and Hades tells Zag constantly how vicious Cerberus is. But, anytime Zag comes upon this Clifford-esque canine, they’re happy, loving, and loyal. Obviously, the point here isn’t to say that ESFJ’s are similar to dogs, but rather that those with this personality type radiate the same type of positive & loving energy as man’s best friend, which is quite the compliment. And, additionally, Cerberus also gives one of the best Keepsakes in the game, making them even more likable.
25 Megara: ESTJ
If there’s one trait that ESTJ-types are known for, it’s that they’re strong-willed. So, of course, this could only fit Megara so perfectly, the most likable of the Three Fury Sisters, and the one romantically involved with Zagreus. Megara, like Hades, is dedicated and direct, but unlike him, she’s also patient and reliable with people she deems worth her time. Megara is fantastic at her job, but as this type implies, she has a real tough time expressing her emotions (other than anger) or relaxing.
24 Hypnos: INTP
Onto the children of Night, Nyx’s offspring, starting with Hypnos. Hypnos might seem irresponsible, airheaded, and lazy when players first meet him, but over time and through his story arc with Thanatos, Hypnos’ positive traits become quite clear. He’s imaginative, has his own organizational methods, and also bears a very abstract method of looking at the world. But, this abstract open-mindedness is also what makes him seem so absent-minded, which can be a bit confusing at first.
23 Dusa: ISFJ
Undoubtedly one of the fan-favorites, Dusa is the main maid in the House of Hades and she takes her job very seriously. She’s an A+ helper, which is a great trait for her job, and it’s also the main trait of ISFJ’s. They’re reliable, supportive, observant, hard-working, with some great practical skills. The only problem is, these types of people tend to put others above themselves even to their own detriment.
22 Thanatos: ISTJ
It might seem odd that another one of Zag’s potential love interests is so similar to his father, but Than and Hades are very different people who just have similar ways of thinking. Thanatos might seem cold and distant at first, but he just has trouble expressing himself and prioritizing emotions over logic. As time goes on, Thanatos learns how to come out of his ISTJ shell for certain people, and begins to understand who he is and how he can adapt to those around him if he wants to.
21 Achilles: ENFP
During his mortal life, Achilles would’ve probably been an ENFJ just like Zagreus, but after his tragic death and his separation from Patroclus, Achilles has reflected on his past self and grown into more of an ENFP type. This is in some way due to him being partially responsible for raising Zagreus, but it also comes from him realizing there are no more battles left for him to fight, and likely that there were many he shouldn’t have fought in the first place.
20 Patroclus: INFP
Patroclus is the introverted balance to Achilles’ extroverted side, he’s quiet and reserved, but that doesn’t mean he isn’t thinking or that he doesn’t care. This can make people think that Patroculus doesn’t want to get to know anyone, but that isn’t necessarily true. He’s just a private sort of person who likes his space, and this contrast is why the two ex-warriors work so well together.
19 Orpheus: INFP
Moving on to the more creative-type characters of Hades, Orpheus seems like a good place to start. Orpheus was a famous musician when he was alive but has really fine-tuned his craft and his emotional well-being now that he’s dead. He might seem quiet or reserved when Zag first starts talking to him, but when he sings players can immediately tell that the guy is passionate, open-minded, creative, and has a deeply emotional soul. Orpheus made some mistakes in his life, and his self-critical nature would’ve let him dwell on it for eternity if Zag hadn’t come along.
18 Eurydice: INFJ
Then there’s Eurydice, the love of Orpheus’ life and the reason for his pain. Eurydice was an Oak Nymph, yet it was a simple snake bite that killed her. Orpheus almost freed her from the Underworld, but his insecurities got the better of him. Luckily, Eurydice manages to forgive him (after some time) thanks to her INFJ altruistic nature. Players will quickly take note of how insightful, headstrong, and equally creative she is when they come across her in Asphodel. But, they tend to be perfectionists in every aspect, and it took her quite a long amount of time to eventually work past Orpheus’ mistake.
17 Charon: INFJ
People might think it’s hard to get a sense of someone who doesn’t actually speak, but Charon manages to get his personality across anyway. This Ferryman of the Styx actually pulls a lot of the strings behind the scenes of the Underworld, and most of them lead back to helping Zag out. It may seem odd that he and Eurydice are of the same personality type, but both of them know more than they let on, are passionate about either their work or craft, and are perfectionists to a fault.
16 Skelly: ESFP
If there was an award for “most obvious personality type” Skelly would win, the guy is obviously an ESFP, the Myers type most commonly associated with those in the entertainment industry. He’s sarcastic, witty, funny, loud, a bit obnoxious, but deeply charming. Yet, for someone who talks so much, he rarely lets on anything about his own past or how he’s feeling. At the core of most entertainers is a person who strives to make others happy, even if it means no one sees them for who they truly are.
15 Sisyphus: ESFJ
ESFJ’s at their core are those who want to help others and just love the act of being around people in general. And, for someone whose only company is a"sentient" boulder, any conversation is good conversation. That said, Sisyphus was a scumbag in his mortal life, so it’s quite a big change from then to his version seen in Hades. Still, seems like eternal punishment is doing wonders for him, as the guy acts like a truly likable gentle giant nowadays.
14 Chaos: ENTP
First, there was the primordial void, and from it, the Titans rose. This Void had a name, and it was Chaos, from which Nyx rose. Nyx and Chaos begin to rekindle their relationship over the course of Hades, but it didn’t dwindle over some argument, the two entities are just very independent lifeforms.
It’s hard to put a personality label on the literal personification of Chaos, but out of all of them, ENTP seems to make the most sense. These types love to question the world, always see things as they are, and yearn for knowledge constantly, and from all the questions Chaos asks Zag during his runs, this seems to be how he thinks.
13 Alecto: ESTP
Now onto the lesser-known Furies, Alecto and Tisiphone. Out of all three of them, Alecto is the biggest wildcard, as the Codex in-game says that she’s no longer allowed in the House of Hades for acts of insubordination long since past. But, she still has a job within the Underworld, and she does it exceedingly well, the job, of course, is torturing the souls of the Undead. She represents more of the negative aspects of ESTP-types, being forceful, violent, impatient, acting on impulse, and just a bit of a mess in general.
12 Tisiphone: ISTP
Charon was easy to figure out thanks to all the kind things many of Hades NPCs had to say about him, or what the Codex said, Tisiphone is a bit harder to discern. Not much is known about this character even in the actual Greek Myths the game is inspired from. And, in-game, she only says one word(usually). This fury is so intently focused on her task of punishing murderers that not much else of her personality shines through, so she can only be described as “focused” like an ISTP would be.
11 Theseus: ESFP
Here’s another boss of the Underworld, in particular, he and his minotaur companion guard to door up to the Temple of Styx. We’re of course talking about Theseus, the Greek Hero who conquered the labyrinth and apparently made a new friend along the way. Like a lot of superstars, Theseus is entirely full of himself and confident in who he is and his abilities. He’s focused on being as big of a personality as possible, even if he seems obnoxious for it.
10 Asterius: ISFJ
In comparison to Theseus, this hulking half-man half-bull is somehow less noticeable, as Asterius has a much smaller personality than his size would imply. In every way, Asterius acts like the classic “honorable warrior of few words”. He’s polite, rarely raises his voice, and acts respectfully even to his enemies. The only time that he becomes emotional, is when Theseus’ well-being is at stake, which is just the most ISFJ thing ever.
