Night in the Woods is an indie darling with endlessly quotable lines. Made by a talented team of three, NITW’s legacy outlasts its controversies. It is known for the strength of its writing, and for the absolutely unforgettable characters.

For such an intimate game, NITW showcases an incredibly diverse cast. Each animal in NITW has their own distinct personality quirks, from god complexes to nightmare eyes.

The Janitor - INTJ

An INTJ will tell you that they are always right, and, well, they’re not usually wrong. INTJs’ independent streak means they are not always the most liked, but they don’t really care.

The Janitor has got a job to do that he’s not about to abandon for anything less than an illicitly gained Fiascola. This prickly character isn’t about to offer friendly hints, but he clearly knows much more about the mysteries of Possum Springs than he lets on.

Germ Warfare - ENTJ

Assertive, self-directed, and objective, ENTJs can be difficult to get to know, as they hate chitchat and enjoy pushing people’s buttons. But ENTJs’ steadfast morality tends to win over others eventually.

Straightforward Germ doesn’t bat an eye at abandoning Mae with his weird Gramma. Mae thinks he’s strange at the beginning, but once she gives him a chance, his direct way of addressing issues appeals to her, and they become close friends.

Mae’s Grandad - INFJ

INFJs are dreamers and mystics. They are kind-hearted and effective natural teachers, just as long as they never have to speak about concrete things.

Mae’s Grandad’s influence in her life is everywhere — the crawlspace, her journal, and in her knowledge of the constellations. He appears briefly as a ghost, but clues about his past that Mae finds in her house show that, even in life, he was somewhat mysterious.

Pastor Karen - ENFJ

ENFJs try to take responsibility for the emotional worlds of everyone around them. This means they can be great idealistic leaders, but they can also easily burn themselves out.

Pastor Karen works so hard to try and help Bruce, the transient cat. She has the strength to defy the town leaders, and always seems to have the energy for a patient word for Mae, but by the end of the game, even she has to admit that she can’t save everyone.

Stan Borowski - ISTJ

ISTJs love a well-organized world and are great at following rules to the letter. They are the kind of person you can count on to follow through with their duty, even when that duty kinda sucks.

Mae’s father is a quiet presence, always there in the evening to watch TV with Mae, and always out working during the day. It’s only at the end of the game that the player realizes his sacrifice, working a terrible job to provide for his family.

Aunt Molly - ESTJ

ESTJs are excellent at managing tricky people and keeping everyone in order. They believe in the power of honesty, although their tendency to speak their minds sometimes comes across as judgmental.

Aunt Mall-Cop is underrated and misunderstood, as an authority figure that Mae rebels against. While she has Mae’s, and the town’s, best interests at heart, she can’t help but let her disapproval show at Mae’s antics.

Bruce - ISTP

ISTPs are loners by nature and simply cannot be corralled into mainstream society. They often have great talents that can go unnoticed, as it might have slipped their mind to tell anyone.

As an unhoused cat, Bruce walks his own solitary path. He is clearly an intelligent and considerate being; despite being down on his luck, he expresses regret for inconveniencing those who wish to help and care for him.

Gregg Lee - ESTP

ESTPs are good, clean fun, minus the good, clean part. Up for absolutely anything despite the obvious risks, ESTPs are as likely to show you the best night of your life as they are to show you the last night of your life.

Gregg is a lovable outcast whose frenetic energy is captured in some of NITW’s most enjoyable mini-games. Although he won’t hesitate to risk his, or Mae’s, safety in pursuit of fun, he is a total iconic fan favorite; everyone wants to “do crimes” with Gregg.

Lori Meyers - ISFP

ISFPs march to the beat of their own drum, no matter what anyone else might suggest. Their creative independent spirits often lead them to become artists or innovators.

As a youth who likes to fall asleep on the train tracks, Lori is certainly one of a kind. She has no qualms about missing more socially sanctioned activities, like Harfest, in favor of watching horror movies on her own.

Garbo and Malloy - ESFP

ESFPs are natural entertainers. They are the life of the party or the star of the show — it doesn’t much matter as long as all eyes are on them.

Garbo and Malloy are literal entertainers, as the co-hosts of the most popular TV show in Possum Springs (possibly the only TV show). Even when their antics stretch the limit of what can be called a joke, they never fail to get a rise out of their audience.

Bea Santello - ISFJ

You can always count on an ISFJ to be there for their loved ones in times of crisis. It’s too bad they can’t always say the same for their friends; if they aren’t careful, ISFJs can have a tendency to get taken advantage of.

Dutiful Bea runs her dad’s shop, and takes care of him after her mom’s passing, even though she has to put her own dreams on hold to be there. She’s even charitable — to a point — with Mae, whose natural footpath runs right through her own mouth when it comes to Bea’s sensitive past.

Candy Borowski - ESFJ

ESFJs are social sweethearts; they can always be found offering help. They are naturally good at fitting in, but this ability can keep them from being philosophically flexible when it’s needed.

Candy is a loving mother to Mae, and a dutiful church worker. She connects easily with her daughter, but just as quickly ends up pushing her away when she doesn’t understand Mae’s rebellion against her prescribed life.

Selmers - INFP

Kind, quiet, and often overlooked, it would be a mistake to assume that the gentle INFPs are pushovers. Within their social-justice-warmed hearts, they are steadfast warriors who will stubbornly refuse to back down about their beliefs.

Selmers is, likewise, a total surprise. For most of the game, she provides laughs with her chill vibe and hilarious poetry, until she unexpectedly unleashes anti-capitalist hell at the library’s poetry group meeting in one of the most moving and devastating moments of the game.

Mae Borowski - ENFP

ENFPs are free spirits with big personalities, but they are also sensitive souls who are easily stressed. They make friends easily, and are curious and intuitive about everyone’s emotions, including their own, but they can sometimes find themselves disconnected from reality.

Mae has her own brand of lovable outcast charm that means she’s never without friends to hang or party with. But her sensitive nature, along with her past unresolved issues around dissociation, makes her vulnerable to the mental stress of Possum Spring’s dark mysteries.

Angus Delaney - INTP

INTPs are quiet, reserved, and a little bit nerdy. All of that masks a deep intelligence, and a thirst for knowledge that is grounded in scientific fact.

Angus keeps quiet about the details of his life, a solid counterpart to his boyfriend’s shenanigans. Of the main group, he is the most rational, and has enough knowledge about computers that Gregg refers to him as a hacker.

The Sky Cat - ENTP

Deeply intelligent and argumentative, ENTPs prefer to live in the world of ideas. They are often accidentally dismissive of human emotions, due to their deep enjoyment of intellectual sparring.

The Sky Cat is powerful — too bad it doesn’t care about your feelings. The Sky Cat will only answer questions it deems worthy of being asked. The Sky Cat may remember you, not because it cares, but only because you happened to be there.
