The Medium is an upcoming survival horror game by Polish developers Bloober Team which is heavily inspired by Silent Hill. That’s always a good sign.
Bloober Team has made a great name for themselves in the horror gaming scene. They brought us the superb Layers of Fear in 2016, the sci-fi horror Observer a year later, followed by a Layers of Fear sequel and Blair Witch in 2019. All of which are visually gorgeous and uniquely chilling in their own ways.
Judging by its reveal trailer, The Medium looks like it’ll be bringing some spooks of the same caliber sometime over the holiday season this year. According to lead designer Wojciech Piejko, it’ll be the studio’s “biggest game [they’ve] built,” as well as its “most ambitious project yet.”
You’ll play as Marianne, a woman with psychic abilities who travels to an abandoned hotel resort as she attempts to uncover the source of some disturbing visions she’s been having about a child’s murder.
The developers are embracing the Silent Hill vibes big time with this one. From forgoing their usual first-person perspective in favor of third-person semi-fixed camera angles, to the whole “two parallel planes of existence impinging on one another” concept, to having Silent Hill composer Akira Yamaoka on board to help create the game’s score.
The Medium is due to release for both PC and Xbox Series X sometime over the 2020 holiday period.
