A physical release for The Mummy Demastered is in the works, according to a Twitter announcement made by WayForward Technologies and Limited Run Games yesterday.

The Mummy Demastered  has been available virtually for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, and Nintendo Switch since 2017, and is based on the movie The Mummy released in the same year starring Tom Cruise and Russel Crowe. The game was received well, with some commending it for being so much better than the movie itself.

The game - a shoot-’em-up action/exploration-based adventure hybrid - has also been praised for its being a great exemplar of the ‘Metroidvania’ genre of platformers - a term coined with specific reference to games in Konami’s classic Castlevania series that, in turn, had adopted a nonlinear, exploratory format reminiscent of Nintendo’s Super Metroid.

The Metroidvania genre has now become a blanket term for “any platform action game with an emphasis on discovery and character growth, and a complex enough world to require auto-mapping.”

Along with stunning retro-inspired graphics and an atmospheric chiptune soundtrack, The Mummy Demastered promises decent doses of adventure, action, and a dash of horror.

Pre-orders for The Mummy Demastered’s physical version open on July 31st 2020 for the Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4
