According to Studio Ghibli producer Toshio Suzuki the studio’s latest film has completed 36 minutes of animation.
Hayao Miyazaki, the man who gave the world Spirited Away, My Neighbor Totoro, and Princess Mononoke, has been working on a new film since 2017 and has not slowed down. The film, Kimi-tachi wa Dō Ikiru ka in Japanese and How Do You Live? in English, is based off of a book from 1937 from author Genzaburō Yoshino’s. Yoshino’s story follows a young man and his growth, spiritually and has a human, a character that is all too familiar for the Studio Ghibli team.
How Do You Live? is completely hand drawn and Miyazaki is currently directing the new project at about one minute of animation per month. While Studio Ghibli usually works on a production schedules, this new Miyazaki film will not be following that old mandate. This should come as no surprise as the original goal was to finish by 2019 and it now looks like the movie still has a few more years to go before it will hit theaters anywhere.
While this may seem like slow going, 36 minutes is actually about one third of the length of standard feature length film—more from Studio Ghibli will be here in no time!
